According to Head Coach Todd Bridge, The administration, coaches and I believe playing Kelso would be detrimental to our team. Kelso isnt just a good football squad, theyre a physical team and I promised our parents at the beginning of the season that my primary responsibilities is the safety and well being of their sons. Because we are in the foundational building stages here at Aberdeen football, playing Kelso tonight would damage our growth. Not only would we lose a handful of players prior to our league opener next week, I would lose the fragile trust of our parents. Aberdeen has a 1-2 record on the season, winning their first game of the year last week against Elma in a 32-26 overtime victory.
Kelso has a 3-0 record on the year, winning games against Heritage 41-7, R.A. Long 62-0, and Mark Morris 48-0.
Kelso is a 3A league school, while Aberdeen is ranked as 2A.
This match was the non-league game of the season for Aberdeen.
Aberdeens next scheduled game is against Centralia on October 4.
Aberdeen WA used to be a rough, tumble blue collar logging town as is Kelso. Boy, how times change!
Why have a football program?
but but but do they get a participation trophy?
When and who scheduled the game? When did the coach realize that his kids were not up for the challenge?
Football is a physical game. There are rules to try to keep it from getting out of hand, but it will never be totally safe.
Huh???
Maybe one day his parents will apologize to him for raising such a mangina.
Well, I don’t know about the kids but this coach deserves to lose every game from here to eternity.
I could NOT remain on that team after something like this.
Geez, how humiliating for the players!
Indeed.
I grew up in the next door town, Aberdeen’s cross town rival, in the late 1960’s. We had to play high schools over our head then in order to get games to fill our schedule (there weren’t that many high schools near by). In those days, Aberdeen had 1000+ students and we had around 500. That was small town football. Nobody wimped out.
Ummm....there is a CHANCE someone will get hurt in any game. Why even HAVE a football team if your primary motivation is not wanting anyone to get hurt?
what kind of message does the coach think hes sending to his team?
I have a cousin who plays football for Kelso.
Hes a big, strong young man. Been lifting weights for years.
Hes also extremely smart and a Boy Scout.
They should just play soccer instead. My daughter played soccer when she was very little. Maybe their strapping lads would be up for that.

I think the coach made the right call. Why pit a flyweight against a heavyweight?
Too many young men get their brains damaged playing high school football. It’s the concussions that do it. Not worth it
My husband is from Hoquiam. He’ll have fun with this one.
In Jersey, the Catholic schools recruit. They are like semi-pro teams. I think that they should play themselves and not small public high schools with limited talent.
The flyweight might win. The flyweight might learn something about trying your best, even though all the odds are against him. The flyweight might learn how to take a punch. The flyweight might learn how to fight a much better boxer. The flyweight might get tougher through a beating. The flyweight might learn how to lose on his feet. There are lots of lessons to be learned. Quitting isn't one of them.
