Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, on Wednesday said he wants the facts and rational thought to be used in work on gun control plans being considered by Congress.
But he doesn't have high hopes.
His comments came as the committee, run by Democrats, worked on a hearing titled "Protecting America from Assault Weapons."
The hearing was to hear from several witnesses, including Nan Whaley, the mayor of Dayton, Ohio, the scene of one of several shootings in recent weeks where either a deranged or homicide-minded individual attacked innocent people, with guns.
Collins pointed out the basic understanding of weaponry is sadly lacking among members of Congress.

OH, and Doug, you do know you’re wasting your time right?
Alabama being such a gun-control state and all....
“Collins pointed out the basic understanding of weaponry is sadly lacking among members of Congress.”
No, it isn’t. With rare exception for the idiot congresswoman from Texas they know exactly what they are trying to do. 50 years ago, anyone could buy a machine gun. Through the mail! This is incremental disarmament.
If Democrats had a chance in Hell to get Trump to compromise, they screwed up royally with this whole impeachment crap!
NFA ‘34 made full auto a registered item.
GCA ‘68 was what ended mail order guns that were not full auto.
Hey Doug....how bout we just let the Constitution be the guide on this issue.
You are correct. My point is a significant infringement of our 2nd ammendment seems to happen at 30 year intervals. We are due. This time the answer is no.
“Collins: ‘Let’s hope rational heads prevail’ on gun control”
The Democrats will not be happy until they get confiscation.
Alabama? Doug Collins is our rep here in Hall county, GA
While you may be accurate, Alabama is STILL a gun-friendly state.
(maybe Blueflag won't notice my gross mistake if I dodge it well.)
Already happened-- back in the 1700s, thank God.
It has been said many times before. Bears repeating. It’s not about guns, it’s about CONTROL.
“50 years ago, anyone could buy a machine gun. Through the mail!”
What pisses me off to no end is that our right to keep and bear arms has been slowly but surely whittled away. My grandfathers could have (but regrettably didn’t) buy machine guns at their local hardware store, for cash, no background check or tax stamp needed. My father couldn’t do that, but he could have (but regrettably didn’t) bought that Soluthurn cannon and had it delivered to our doorstep. I could never do that, but at least I had the ability to buy a brand-new full auto if I went through the NFA process until May of 1986. My kids cannot do ANY of those things.
A right is something that MUST, by definition, apply at all times and in all locations. That is simply not the case with the 2nd Amendment, which is clearly the red-headed step-child of the Bill of Rights. I cannot wait until 1 or 2 more Supreme Court vacancies arise, and Trump fills them, so that a REAL challenge to laws that plainly violate the 2nd Amendment can be made with a reasonable prospect of a fair and objective decision.
BTW, the NFA as it applies to full autos is COMPLETELY open to challenge. First of all, based on the 1939 “US v. Miller” decision. Why? First, because it WILL be within “judicial notice” that such arms have utility to the performance of militia duties; second, the government in “Miller” relied upon the argument (and the Supremes bought it) that the NFA didn’t ban anything, it only taxed it. Well, the 1986 FOPA BANNED the purchase of any new full auto by a civilian - so the tax cannot be legally collected. The government needs to be hoisted on its own petard on this issue (if not hung from lamp posts all over the DC area). The argument under the “Heller” decision that full autos are “not in common use” cannot be logically made, as the very reason why they are not in common use is the NFA - the very law that will, someday, be challenged - that is a circular argument, and the Supremes won’t buy it.
Sorry Susan but impeachment talk means NO GUN CONTROL for the cheats and liars.
First great unintended consequence these idiots will deal with.
Oops... Sorry Doug Collins. But I’m sure Susan Collins wants to disarm us as well.
