The country’s most celebrated soldier has been accused of a shocking act against a handcuffed Afghan soldier.
Last night 60 Minutes revealed “the unpalatable truth about a group of men Australians think of as heroes” — including Victoria Cross for Australia recipient Ben Roberts-Smith.
The “damning allegations” were the result of an investigation by 60 Minutes, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
The investigation focused on the death of Afghan farmer Ali Jan, who was killed on September 11, 2012 — 11 years after the September 11 terrorist attacks that sparked the war in Afghanistan in the first place.
Mr Roberts-Smith is accused of kicking a handcuffed Afghan farmer off a cliff, before he was executed by another Australian soldier.
Mr Roberts-Smith furiously rejected the claims.
“I categorically deny the allegations made against me in tonight’s 60 Minutes program,” he said in a statement.
“I am concerned that tonight’s story and the previous publications by the SMH/Age are an attempt to improperly influence the outcome of the (Inspector-General of the Defence Force) inquiry.”
Two weeks before the farmer’s death, an Afghan army sergeant named Hekmatullah opened fire on Australian troops, killing Rick Milosevic, Sapper James Martin and Robert Poate at point blank range and then fleeing.
After that, the Special Air Service was tasked with tracking Hekmatullah down.

In part because I believe in the professionalism of Australian soldiers.
But also because if a group of SAS soldiers decided to go rogue and start committing war crimes... there wouldn't be any living witnesses.
For the record - probably three of the four most leftwing media organs in Australia (the other one of the four being the ABC).
If it’s coming from 60 minutes odds are it is total fabrication.
The Rats in the justice and state departments ignored the law but 60 minutes goes all out to embarrass one of our best allies while the new PM is doing a state visit. I just despise these bastards

This story doesn’t pass the smell test.
This is the Australian version of 60 Minutes, just to be clear - the American version may well be garbage too, but this is home grown.
Well Scott Morrison is conservative so the media already hate him, but I for one have never heard of this Ben person before.
Once again 60 Minutes secures a guilty verdict in the court of public opinion........Disgusting!

Not that surprising seeing you’re not Australian, but Ben Roberts-Smith is one of the most famous people in Australia. I’m not sure what his politics are - he doesn’t play party politics as far as I know - but he was the first Australian to receive the Victoria Cross (the Commonwealth’s highest honour for bravery in the face of the enemy) in forty years and that pretty much catapaulted him into the public eye. Since leaving the Army, he’s gone into business - and he’s actually General Manager of one of Australia’s television networks now, which makes 60 Minutes inquiry into him even more problematic - that’s made on a rival network.
When did 60 Minutes do an expose on ISIS/Taliban atrocities?
War is hell, and 60 Minutes wants a sanitized war, and a leftist controlled war.
In 1983, 60 Minutes claimed the Maverick missile was no good. They said they had tried to contact Senator Goldwater but he refused to talk to them about the missile. I was told later that Senator Goldwater had been in the hospital at the time they wanted to speak to them. He (the Senator)was really mad at CBS and I got to read copies of the letters between the Senator and Van Gordon Sauter (CBS News president).
I haven’t watched 60 Minutes since then.
I still remember the 60 Min attacks on the F15 and Apache Helicopter.
9-11-2012 wasn’t just the anniversary of the 2001 attacks.
It was the same day exactly as Benghazi.
So in affect you are saying they are going after him because he is with a rival station? Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if this was 60 minutes motivation for dragging him through the mud. Sounds like their MO for decades.
