Zechariah. Thanks. I have a commentary book on the 12 (”minor”) Prophets. And my several Bible guides on my 2 1/2 shelves of Bible books. Will look into it.

As best I gather, it’s because the tribe of Levi generally was granted exemption from defense service, they having religious duties instead. ( Rashi pointed out that Levi was included in the fight against Midian - (analysis? That was a special engagement at the Creator’s direction
And not your run of the mill war?). Well, that and the Rambam’s idealized religious devotee comment I mentioned earlier. That’s about all the authority I know of for granting the yeshiva men exemption from the common defense. My personal opinion is that these citations are not persuasive and that the guys should join the IDF and do so enthusiastically. At least they should be thankful they are given this opportunity of defending the Jewish people and land. Something their forefathers couldn’t do for 2000 years. ( and if there’s more persuasive authority for exempting them I am confident someone reading this will advise us). Best, fhc

Most of the benefits conferred upon the Haredim exist because at the inception of the modern Jewish state the Orthodox were a small minority-because most were exterminated by the Nazis during the Holocaust-and granting them exceptions didn't have a significant impact on society.

As their numbers, and commensurate political strength, increased, they were able to enshrine new exemptions-such as exemption from military service-into law.

Thank you for the additional info. I had suspected this but, didn’t want to influence any response by adding my speculation.

Since the Jewish Tradition is very very surname and Family Tree oriented can all of these men trace their families origin back to the house of Levi without doubt?

It seems to me that simply claiming I’m an Ultra-Orthodox Jew and I study all day 6 days a week and, you all must support my lifestyle and exempt me from any duties beyond my studies is bogus.

The equivalent of Welfare Parasites.

Further, if the projections of the Ultra-Orthodox percentage growth is true that will become unsustainable for Israel as a nation.

The House of Levi was a small house. The vast majority were of the other 11 families.

If one can simply declare I’m an Ultra-Orthodox Jew and therefore you must support me and not burden me with any requirement beyond my studies. The nation of Israel will eventually collapse.

>> I read Israel will have an Orthodox majority by 2030. Guess the sinful minority are starting to panic. <<

To be fair, there's a big difference between the regular, mainstream "Orthodox" Jews, and the "ULTRA" Orthodox Jews, which are a fringe movement.

My ideal choice for Prime Minister is a regular Orthodox Jew, Bezalel Smotrich, and he's far more conservative and much more religious than Bibi is.

On the other hand, the so-called "Ultra" Orthodox Jews are a bunch of loudmouth idiots who caused Bibi's government to collapse because they INSISTED on the unrealistic demand that their kids be exempt from military services for "religious" reasons. Of course there's nothing about "Thou Shall Not Serve In The Military" in the bible, so they made up some nonsense that their kids are too busy reading the Torah to do military training exercises and blah blah blah.

I don't want those dopes in the government pulling the strings either. I bet if you polled most "Orthodox" Jews, even they are tired of the "Ultra" Orthodox throwing temper tantrums.

They do not speak for Orthodox Jews anymore than David Duke speaks for white people.

I am planning on becoming an Ultra-Orthodox Jew (someone who follows the Torah completely). Chabad. Check them out: www.Chabad.org.

The resentment isn’t that they refuse to fight but that service is mandatory for everyone else. We don’t resent the Amish but some might if there was a draft.

We could accommodate the Amish, the way we accommodated the Quakers, by telling them "OK, we'll make you a medic. You won't have to carry a rifle, but you will have the same risk of dying as everyone else".

A hundred years ago, even the Ultra Orthodox had to work for a living. They could engage in Torah study all they wanted, AFTER earning their living.

You can do as you please, as long as my tax money is not having to support you.

Would not make the Orthodox hapy. Unless they make a deal and let them build a temple on or near the mount.

The ultra-Othodox would oppose building a temple, because they believe that only the Messiah can do that.
