The Coast Guard has issued a safety warning for commercial boat operators, saying they should monitor the amount of unsupervised phone charging on the boat in the wake of a boat fire off the coast of California that killed 34 people.
USA Today reported that a preliminary report into the fire near Santa Cruz Island could come out as soon as Thursday, according to the the National Transportation Safety Board. While the report will likely not include a cause, it will examine how batteries and electronics were stored.
The Coast Guard urged those operating a boat to "reduce potential fire hazards and consider limiting the unsupervised charging of lithium-ion batteries and extensive use of power strips and extension cords," the bulletin said.

How about sparks in the center fuel tank? Should people watch out for that as well?

Always charge your phones on boats before a fire! Charging them after a fire would be....silly.
Yeah, I am also skeptical of the fried battery theory.
Is everyone in the civilized world incapable of functioning without a smart phone 24/7?
Sure looks that way.
Killed by a defective Chinese made battery.
Having done enough Scuba Diving to have been a certified Divemaster and having owned a number of boats and having been on more than a few in the 50 to 80 foot range, grease fire in the galley while preparing breakfast for the divers was my hunch all along. It would explain a lot. The demand to DO SOMETHING about galley fires on boats would require scrapping just about every boat in the hands of private owners. Regulating phone chargers on boats is much more convenient.

Probably counterfeit Chicom garbage bought on Amazon.
This boat was murdered by Green Energy...
Yeah, you probably have other things to worry about after a fire besides charging your phone.
Wasn’t the cook in his rack when the fire started? This isn’t a galley fire.
Yeah, that is what happened.
Only if you convert a 747 into a yacht.
Airlines already have procedures in place to prevent accidental lithium battery malfunctions during flight. There is enough evidence apparently that those batteries can be unstable. Lithium batteries have been known for flash fires in the past.

I was visiting with my nephew and his wife plus their two-week old baby. The mother was on her phone, texting, almost the entire time we were there. Even while talking with her visitors.
The baby had demanded to come two months early, but is otherwise normal, healthy and at home, and another story.
Only one of the crew died. She was not the cook, IIRC. So I think its pretty safe to say the cook was awake and above decks. Which caused me to wonder just what activities were taking place? I can see how 5 buddies would dissemble if it meant one of them might be charged with manslaughter or worse.
I’ll Google that and email you the answer.
Here was my most dangerous pic from a vacation a few years ago(lol):
Of course, the picture was taken by our guide, who double checked the ropes before we descended.
