N Carolina special election tests Trump, 2020 GOP prospects

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Republicans are hoping an eleventh-hour pep talk from President Donald Trump will propel them to a special election victory Tuesday in a GOP-friendly House district in North Carolina, a race that could illuminate their chances of retaking the House majority and Trump’s own reelection prospects in 2020.

Trump urged an arena packed with MAGA-hat wearing supporters Monday to vote for conservative state Sen. Dan Bishop, who’s in a tossup battle for the vacant seat. Playing to evangelical Christians in the crowd, Trump said Democrats are “not big believers in religion” and added, “Tomorrow, we take the first steps in firing Speaker Nancy Pelosi and winning back the House.”

Trump’s appearance, the same day Vice President Mike Pence and Bishop barnstormed the district by bus, underscored the GOP’s all-hands effort to avert defeat. Trump carried the district by 11 points in 2016 and the seat’s been held by Republicans since John F. Kennedy was president in 1963, and a loss would nurture doubts over whether the anti-Trump momentum that fed Democrats’ House takeover last year has faded.

Opposing Bishop was moderate Democrat Dan McCready, a former Marine who earned a Harvard master’s degree in business and narrowly trailed in an election for the seat last year that was later invalidated after evidence surfaced of election fraud.

Both sides saw Tuesday’s contest as too close to call — in itself an ominous sign for Republicans.

They should.

But, I know what you mean. People have lives and don’t give “politics” the attention it deserves. Nothing has more effect on our daily lives except being unemployed or a bad mother-in-law.

Seriously, ALL should give great and more thought to our votes.

That’s because the Democrats lie their way into office. Here’s another ‘’independent’ ‘ vote, a Democrat conservative.

Name a single Democrat who breaks ranks once elected, a single one.

There is one, Manchin occasionally. But I can name many Republicans.

Sounds like the AP already has a heads up on a Democrat win... by fraud! This race if the republican wins will be contested over and over again like the FL and other red states that we lost by the smallest of margins !...count til the RAT WINS!!

I was number 462 in a relatively small district in NC9. Quite high for a special. 15 people with me, all white, maybe one Dem in the mix. Early voting was 30000 D to 23000 R. Should be interesting.

And when the Republican Dan in the race wins, they will proclaim that it’s because the district is a strong RED district, thus his win means nothing.

Has Manchin ever voted with R's when it was a critical vote? Dems play this game well. They allow Dems in conservative districts to vote with Republicans when it makes no difference in the outcome but does help with their next re-election.

I personally don't like early voting. Only asking for trouble there.
