N Carolina special election tests Trump, 2020 GOP prospects

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Republicans are hoping an eleventh-hour pep talk from President Donald Trump will propel them to a special election victory Tuesday in a GOP-friendly House district in North Carolina, a race that could illuminate their chances of retaking the House majority and Trump’s own reelection prospects in 2020.

Trump urged an arena packed with MAGA-hat wearing supporters Monday to vote for conservative state Sen. Dan Bishop, who’s in a tossup battle for the vacant seat. Playing to evangelical Christians in the crowd, Trump said Democrats are “not big believers in religion” and added, “Tomorrow, we take the first steps in firing Speaker Nancy Pelosi and winning back the House.”

Trump’s appearance, the same day Vice President Mike Pence and Bishop barnstormed the district by bus, underscored the GOP’s all-hands effort to avert defeat. Trump carried the district by 11 points in 2016 and the seat’s been held by Republicans since John F. Kennedy was president in 1963, and a loss would nurture doubts over whether the anti-Trump momentum that fed Democrats’ House takeover last year has faded.

Opposing Bishop was moderate Democrat Dan McCready, a former Marine who earned a Harvard master’s degree in business and narrowly trailed in an election for the seat last year that was later invalidated after evidence surfaced of election fraud.

Both sides saw Tuesday’s contest as too close to call — in itself an ominous sign for Republicans.

The Dems were busted trying to steal this Seat last year and Bishop will win by more than 15 points.

“Democrat Dan McCready, a former Marine who earned a Harvard master’s degree in business“

Pretty formidable resume. I’m a little worried about this one. MSM is really going over the top if we lose it.

Yes I know and if you do a deep dive he is a Rat no doubt. But do most voters do a deep dive especially for a house seat?

It’s a House seat to be filled for less than 1 year.

In my mind the point is that Trump made an effort, typical rally effort, to motivate his followers to get off their asses, reject the tendency to be complacent in an off season election and go vote. Trump is testing his motivation skills and abilities.

Democrats being democrats are basically lazy and with no real fire in theri bellies might not me adequately motivated to summon the energy and wherewithall to go vote.

Disagree. Democrats are crazy believers who knock on doors more than we do. Might be getting paid-don’t know.

And Bishop will run again— regardless of the outcome of this election. They purposely kept this very important district OUT of the Republican block in the House.

The people in NC doing the delay and “voter fraud” claims , investigation and etc.-— are all rabid liberal dems machine for the governor who beat McCrory. Former NC AG Cooper— who is a rabid leftist beat McCrory. McCrory’s ads were “with democrat hilary clinton in the whitehouse, NC will need strong conservative governor to lead the state”. In short— he distanced himself from Trump and Durham county vote fraud gave the governor’s election to Cooper.

Cooper and his judicial fiat pals and DOJ friends of Lowretta lynch— have pursued both the “gerrymander” angle as well as “ballot harvesting” (which dems do...everywhere, and illegally filing dead voter ballots).

Just some background. Dan Bishop will be the Congressman... and it will be close. The next election will be a Presidential year— and turnout for trump will re-elect (or Elect) Bishop.

Does anyone else find it interesting that not a single public poll has been released for either of these races?

Any indication on how turnout has been so far today in NC?

I disagree with the notion some have that it's no big deal if Bishop loses tonight because he'll be swept in next year on a "Trump wave."

Everybody that supports Trump in that district needs to get out and VOTE! No excuses.

I’ll be surprised if the Republican wins, he is not expected to win.
