At least 31 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in a stampede in the Iraqi city of Karbala, as Shia Muslim worshipers commemorated Ashura on Tuesday, according to Iraq's health ministry.
Thousands had jammed the streets to attend festivals marking the most important Shia holy day of the year.

((This seems to happen a lot during islamic pilgrimages etc.))
It’s part and parcel of their events whenever the people get together....even their family events often end with one form of death or violence. Accidental and otherwise.

Happy Ashura!
Shia Muslims Celebrate Ashura By Cutting Their Son's Heads With a Knife, Until They Bleed Profusely, Thus Commemorating the Way Mohamed's Grandson Died One the Battlefield.

The politically correct way to view this “tragic” incident is that we must give them credit for trying and because their self-esteem as a people may be at stake. /s

the most important Shia holy day of the year.Interesting euphemism, "holy day." It's a holiday to remember when Ali was murdered on the steps of the Golden Mosque in Najaf. He was assumed to be Mohammed's heir. When he was assassinated, it led to the current Sunni/Shia schism. It basically has no religiosity to it; it's all about men and power over others and one group not getting their shot at running the show 1400 years ago.

IIRC, Ashura is the holiday with a lot of self cutting and other forms of self-flagellation.
A stampede of the faithful during such a display would be a bloody mess.
