Well, then I can only assume Labor Day (late 1800s) and MLK Day (died 1968) are straight out, right?

The Fed can enforce Republican free speech in leftist jurisdictions. Just as it did for black free speech in segregationist jurisdictions.

They are REALLY stretching the ordinance here. It says “…within ten days of rather cessation of such business or sale of such product that renders the sign obsolete…”

The ordnance is clearly intended to cover business or private “For Sale” signs, not memorials, to prevent the town from being an eyesore. If they interpret it to cover memorials, then ALL war memorials and other civic memorial signs would have to come down. Does the town have a “Founded in 18XX” sign? That’s obsolete and has to come down. Do any city buildings have cornerstones with the founding date on them? Obsolete. Is there an IOOF sign on a building? Obsolete and has to come down.

What a loon who dreamt this up. No doubt some insane leftist.

How to talk common sense into these people, I have no idea. However, having their contact info will make it a whole lot easier!

It is IL, where patriotism has been in peril for decades.

This town should take the picture of the town idiot who complained and whomever sent the letter and post them on a billboard outside town with a big letters and pictures that say “Beware of our town idiots” with their pictures for all to see.

How about just telling them NO. If they want reporters following them day and night they might wise up.

My late father in law was a village trustee in Northern Illinois. He enjoyed having what little power that gave him over ordinary citizens. One of his pastimes was to look for unlicensed business. Someone receiving or sending too many packages might get a visit. I get the impression that homeowners’ associations attract the same kind of ‘leadership’.

Oh, for Pete’s sake! The ordinance they are invoking is an anti-nuisance ordinance requiring the removal garage sale signs after the garage sales are finished, it cannot be used to remove permanently installed memorial plaques on private property. These are pretty standard nuisance sign ordinances most communities pass. It is patently obvious the ordinance is tied to a commercial activity, not to an ongoing personal, political, or memorial purpose, all of which are Free Speech protected and are not subject to this commerce ordinance.

Handy - that way, when crosses and other “offensive” stuff is torn down from public property, they can ensure it doesn’t end up on private property under they “purview”.
Probably had some muzzies complain and opted to kneel before them with the napes of their necks bared for the sword as a sign of obeisance...
