A draft U.S. peace deal with the Taliban could result in another Saigon in which the Afghan government is toppled from power and its leaders executed after U.S. troops withdraw, warns a former top FBI counterterrorism agent and international security consultant.
If we continue the negotiations only between us and between the Taliban, that is not a withdrawal that is another Saigon, said Ali Soufan, one of the FBIs lead agents targeting al-Qaida before the 2001 terror attack, when the group was headquartered in Afghanistan under the protection of the Taliban. Because, you know, were telling the Afghan government, were telling the Afghani security forces, were telling the Afghani army, Were out of here.
In April 1975, as Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) fell to North Vietnamese troops, U.S. personnel in the South Vietnamese capital organized a chaotic evacuation by helicopter. South Vietnamese government officials were taken captive, imprisoned, exiled or executed.

qaz123 where do you get 15 members of the US military have died in that country.? The article states more than 2,200 Americans have been killed there since the conflict began. How many more young men have to die to save forces that occasionally shoot us in the back? Afghanistan is a shithole. It was one before we got there and will be one long after we leave. The Chinese will own Afghanistan. How many Chinese youthshave died there?
Making the case for never ending wars.
And this time, we don't bail the animals out with Stingers and covert support. China will bleed from the eyes...
One more thing. China smuggles opium into the US, to those dim enough to use it. Junkies kill themselves with it. We just lost a cure for cancer? This century old experiment in social engineering called the Drug War is a failure.
qaz123 where do you get 15 members of the US military have died in that country.?....my apologies, I forgot to add, that’s the number for 2019. Although I think that number just went up by 1, making it 16.
Everything else you’ve said is spot on. As for Afghanistan being a shithole. I can attest to that, I’ve been there.
At this point, we have two choices, IMHO...
Be the ‘Colonialist’ that we’ve been accused of and take what we want.
Pull out, take all our stuff with us, find out where all the Afghani’s have been hiding the money they’ve been stealing for years and take it back.
No need for any service member to get a sprained ankle, let alone die, in that God forsaken place.
I don’t give a damn. Let them kill each other.
Sneakers.
of course the way to effectively cancel a “what if “ scenario is to pull out of Afghanistan and nuke the crap out of the entire country.
Except this time the U.S. won’t be a refuge for them.
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier of the Queen!
Rudyard Kipling
As I predicted 48 hours after the towers fell, George W. Bush elected to fight a Vietnam war in South Asia.
And, as TomasUSMC always says, "fight like Nam, finish like Nam".
So, since Vietnam wars always end with the last chopper off the roof of the American embassy, that's how Afghanistan has to end.
What a waste.
revisionist drivel
wrong then, wrong now
Except that's not a choice anyone has the authority to make.
“The greatest gift our country can give the Cambodian people is not guns but peace. And the best way to accomplish that goal is by ending military aid now. Rep. Chris Dodd (D., Conn.); Congressional Record, March 12, 1975
Ever wonder how many stars/starlets Harvey Weinstein shared with Dodd when he was chairman of and chief lobbyist for the Motion Picture Association of America?
So?
You can never defeat a guerilla opponent unless you are willing to cut off the source of his supplies and new recruits. Otherwise, so long as he has a base, there will always be new guerillas.
We needed to go to N. Vietnam to defeat the Viet Cong (and we didn’t do it, so we fought a war of attrition);
and we need to go to Pakistan to shut down the madrasses, and close out the Taliban
otherwise there will always be new Taliban coming at us.
Oddly, I worry more about another 9/11.
why was our sacrifices so easily cast aside by so many?
I dont have any easy simple answer. However please know I do appreciate your service to our country and I say thank you for carrying the burden of loss of your friends all these years.
What influence? It would be nice if we started influencing our own government. Right now our very freedom is under threat domestically, and we are trying to do what internationally?? Let’s think about balancing the budget and growing the private economy instead interventionism?
In general you are right of course.
If there was a change of rules, the problem would end
For every dead American, there must be 25 dead Taliban. That includes Taliban in Burkas.
Then, kill off those at the funerals
