Phillip Lee quits Tories, leaving government without a majority

Boris Johnson has seen his one-vote Commons majority vanish before his eyes, as a statement by the prime minister to parliament was undermined by the very public defection of the Conservative MP Phillip Lee to the Liberal Democrats.

The stunt, in which the pro-remain Bracknell MP walked across the chamber to the Lib Dem benches flanked by two of his new colleagues, happened as Johnson updated the Commons on last month’s G7 summit, a statement devoted mainly to Brexit.

Look at it this way. There is no majority for no deal and ye no majority to revoke Brexit. There is no majority to ask for another extension.

And, quite frankly the EU wants them out now, the UK in the EU is like California in the USA

The October 31 exit is effectively stopped.

No. It happens by default unless some legislation passes to delay it. Boris just needs to ensure that no such legislation passes, by whatever means necessary.

No, the Queen did NOT dissolve parliament.

What she assented to was a 5 week recess ie a prorogued time between sessions to start from 9th September

Does this 5 week recess mean there will be no parliamentary action until Monday, October 14?

Or can Boris call for a vote despite the recess?

This Brit political system has me bollixed.

I have no idea of British politics, but I don’t see how Brexit is stopped by a change of parliament control, without a change of law as well. The date was set months ago. Hard Brexit happens. I think the controversy is how to enact a May like Brexit deal.

The UK doesn't have a written constitution, but the one fundamental principle of British government is "Parliamentary sovereignty." Parliament can do, literally, anything, and one Parliament can overrule a prior one. The referendum was technically non-biding, although most politicians said they would abide by it, because it was a vote of the people, not of Parliament.

I guess I learn something everyday. How on earth did Great Britain survive as long as it has with such a chaotic system?

Yes. During the 5 weeks no parliamentary action will take place. In addition since this is the time between sessions no actions can be carried over from one period to a other. On Oct 15 everything starts anew.

Boris can’t call for a parliamentary vote during this time.

It survived and thrived precisely because it had a muddled system that was flexible and good for the times. But the transient nature has drawbacks as well
