Phillip Lee quits Tories, leaving government without a majority

Boris Johnson has seen his one-vote Commons majority vanish before his eyes, as a statement by the prime minister to parliament was undermined by the very public defection of the Conservative MP Phillip Lee to the Liberal Democrats.

The stunt, in which the pro-remain Bracknell MP walked across the chamber to the Lib Dem benches flanked by two of his new colleagues, happened as Johnson updated the Commons on last month’s G7 summit, a statement devoted mainly to Brexit.

He was a member of the Conservative Party until 3 September 2019, when he defected to the Liberal Democrats.

In my opinion, any politician who is elected while campaigning to the people as supporting x, but then decides to change to y, should be permanently banned from public office. It’s called truth in advertising.

"Well, guess Boris can have that snap election after all."

What choice does he have? The October 31 exit is effectively stopped. Now he needs to force the issue back to the voters.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Back to the voters??

The "remainers" have been trying to force a do-over since they originally lost. Another referendum would be a win for that side.

A majority of UK voters voted for Brexit yet the establishment, deep state politicians have blocked it for the past several years. Boris Johnson was trying to make Brexit happen and this defection once again torpedoes the exit.

I have no idea of British politics, but I don’t see how Brexit is stopped by a change of parliament control, without a change of law as well. The date was set months ago. Hard Brexit happens. I think the controversy is how to enact a May like Brexit deal.

If I were a Brit on either side of the issue I would be so disgusted by that turncoat I would vote against him ever holding public office again.

Dudn’t the queen just dissolve parliment? If so, this can’t effect anything untill they are back in session.

It is NOT effectively stopped. No one has gone back to the other 27 countries to beg for a third extension. And the other 27 will want a guarantee for what the UK will do with such an extension.

My opinion is that October 31 UK crashing out is still very much on the cards

Wrong. 37% of British voters voted for leave.

There was and is no majority for no deal Brexit.

The problem is that there is no majority for anything else.

The UK should crash out with no deal on 31 Oct

No, the Queen did NOT dissolve parliament.

What she assented to was a 5 week recess ie a prorogued time between sessions to start from 9th september

Arguably the “conservative “ party changed, not him.

He was one of the few “conservative “ party members who didn’t agree and didn’t vote for the conservative government legislating gay marriage
