Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., told an audience in South Carolina Friday that he is working on legislation that would "eliminate medical debt in this country."
Sanders made the remark during a question-and-answer period following a town hall meeting in Florence on "Medicare-for-All." A female attendee explained to Sanders that she doesn't make enough money to qualify for ObamaCare and has a large amount of medical debt not covered by insurance.
When the woman asked Sanders if he had a plan for that, the self-described democratic socialist told her: "In another piece of legislation that we're offering, we're gonna eliminate medical debt in this country."
The Sanders campaign confirmed to Fox News that the proposal was new, but details were scant.
"We are introducing legislation that would end all medical debt in this country," Sanders told reporters as he departed the town hall. "The bottom line is it is an insane and cruel system, which says to people that they have to go deeply into debt or go bankrupt because of what? Because they came down with cancer or they came down with heart disease or they came down with Alzheimers, or whatever ...
"In the midst of a dysfunctional healthcare system, we have to say to people that you cannot go bankrupt or end up in financial duress," Sanders added. "That is cruel and something we've gotta handle. This is something that we're working on and that we will introduce."

Is Bernie’s mouth writing checks his ass can’t cash again? Break out your wallet Berrnie!
What do you mean “working on”? You’ve been in Congress for 80 years and you’re just now “working on” it?
I buy my own medical insurance and the monthly premiums are staggering. Well north of $1000. But when Mrs. Henkster had cancer, her treatments cost somewhere around $750,000. After the $6000 deductible, insurance paid every dime without any problem. That’s what its for. Things cost money and if you manage your money right, you do well. If not, you do poorly. Bernie the socialist wants to punish success and reward failure.
More FredocRAT sleight of mouth. He just wants to transfer the bills to others. At exorbitant prices.
Yo, Bern, bankruptcy IS cancelling debt. It gives you the chance to start over.
Cuba style health care for all!
Old and desperate.
C’mon Bernie, go for the trifecta:
-Eliminate student loan debt
-Eliminate medical debt
the next one is to eliminate credit card debt. You can do it Bernie, just wave your arms around like a madman, look grumpy and say “I have another plan I’m working on, to eliminate all credit card debt”.
I’m voting for Bernie! Bernie promises to eliminate all responsibility. Everything will be free. Bernie is the only one who will usher in utopia when everyone will feel the Bern!
Talk about left field...
Let’s see the hard and believable numbers on how this will be paid for. “Taxing the rich” is BS and doesn’t count.
With Biden we cure cancer and no doubt everything else!
Why bother with Bernie? Biden can just add this to his ideas too!
I can only hope the "swing" voters will see through the pandering, obsequious promises RAT candidates are making.
I think there are exactly TWO issues the Democrats tend to be on the right side of.
One of them, Trump took right away from them. He 100% took it away from them.
Trade, and China. Trump 100% is in the right on trade, and China.
100%
OTOH, US medicine is insanely expensive. Just nuts.
Trump seems just AOK with that. Now if I had to choose one issue for Trump to stand up for America on, I am 100% for Trump picking Trade as the big issue.
But US medicine costs are completely insane. Just nuts.
Unfortunately I think this issue will be a good one for Bernie.
Just my view.
I know, I will get clobbered with negative comments for this. I apologise to Jim Thompson ahead of time, and will not get into any back and forth on this issue simply because I (really) like this website. A lot.
But this issue could win over a very large section of Americans.
I think.
See where this is going. Not free houses but government guaranteed payment of mortgages and bails out banks when home-”owners” default. Colleges charge exorbitant tuition, ever increasing, and government will pay the defaulted loans. Now health care will also not be “free” but paid by us to the greedy hosptials which do not try to control costs.
Wealth distribution via fleecing the workers and taxpayers.
Excellent summary.
When it comes to medical care, pretty much everyone wants all the medical products and services they choose to consume at no cost to themselves or a cost that does not require them to sacrifice other preferences.
I'm fond of pink fluffy unicorns, myself - I have a 7-year-old daughter - but I don't believe in them.
Bernie is telling you his view on debt.
He does not want to pay it.
That means he will not want to pay the federal debt either.
Default.
Remember that word.
What happens when you default is you can’t borrow again for a long long time.
Imagine a federal government unable to borrow money.
Guess that would shrink .gov in a hurry!
See—Bernie is a Freeper but does not know it. ;-)
Your comment on what people “want” is accurate.
They “want” “free” health care—which means they want their unlimited health care paid for by someone else.
That is what they want.
We get it.
I want to win Powerball tomorrow.
I really do.
If Bernie will do it for me, why not, I will vote for him too. ;-)
Anytime somebody asserts healthcare as a "right," I will call the person out for supporting slavery for this very reason. By claiming that they cannot be denied healthcare they are asserting ownership of the labor of doctors, nurses, EMTs, pharmacists, etc.
Demon Santa Claus.
That's WHY he says these things.
At any given time there are 25% to 35% of the public who are always ready to buy into ANY promise of "FREE $HIT!"
Bernie has as much chance of being elected as I have of becoming a member of the British Parliament.
