IBM has been accused of firing thousands of older employees over the past few years as part of a rebranding strategy to appeal to millennial workers.
Some former employees have filed lawsuits against IBM. In one civil case, former VP of Human Resources Alan Wild said IBM had "laid off 50,000 to 100,000 employees in just the last several years" in order to make itself seem like "[a] cool, trendy organization," like Google or Amazon, and not like "an old fuddy duddy organization." These statements were obtained court document filed Tuesday in Texas

Get over it!
Sure, say that to companies that wont hire blacks and see how far you get.
In IT, the older experienced workers are being replaced by younger foreign H1B workers. It isnt that they are just older, they are mostly white and mostly male. The same is true for women, there just happens to be less of them. As Americans we have a right to claim age discrimination.
Oh please, these big tech companies arent replacing us older IT workers with American young people, they are replacing us with H1B foreign employees and their wives as well, next comes a green card and babies born here to become citizens.

That is correct. And there are other Americans, frankly, that will happily step over your dead body if they can make money on it. Until the alligator eats them last, or so they hope.
Same with illegal invaders. While Boosh and brudda Jeb! enjoy their millions they’ll happily pontificate about jobs that Americans refuse to do.
Same with their Democrat besties.
...and get 1/10 the work.
Hmmm... I'm not at all sure I agree with that.. The only thing I think works is a free and open marketplace.. But you gota make sure nobody is in cahoots with one another... If the markets are rigged it can't work....
And don’t forget the AWESOME work ethics of the millennial snowflakes. If nothing else, it would be like working at Comedy Central to be employed there and observe the children.
“IIRC a case regarding older workers being laid off/fired to make way for lower paid replacements was, some years ago, decided by SCOTUS in favor of the company doing the firing.”
You’re right. My former employer, a Fortune 100 company, was awaiting the outcome of that case before deciding to lay off hundreds of long-term, 50+ year-old employees (me included). Fortunately I was able to retire at that point.
Hey the giants have been doing this for years ATT started in the 90’s - did away with pensions - started with pittance 401k handouts! Offering few $100k+ for 30 yrs service please!
Exactly. Corporations changed the equation, not the employees.
Obama care gave them another chance to age discriminate to kick off 65+ age to other ins providers off of employee ins plans in 2009...
companies constantly age discriminate 55+ and old and who gives a SH*T - no one!
How many H1-B visa holders were there under the millenials?
reply to:
The Obamacare scare caused this across a whole lot of industries.
Obamanation care.
ABSO - DAMN - LUTELY agree!
reply to: Especially if said older worker is a white male.
YOU ARE CORRECT!
That pretty much goes for anything.
But my view is that the fewer resources a company needs to have focused on non-core aspects of its' business, the better. And think how many company resources are devoted just to insure their employees, that could be better applied elsewhere.
One issue a young relative tells me is that in both his current and former work places the older guys are entrenched in legacy software strongholds and fight tooth and nail against adopting new tech that will improve productivity as it would end their importance in being the only ones who know how to keep things running at the legacy level.
you are too old to be a politician past age 65! Except TRUMP who is age factor excused till he dies!
And term limited - after initial run two in house, after initial run one more in senate.
I’ve seen that too. Which is why I’m constantly learning the new technologies, and am known as the “go to guy” for new technologies. That’s very important.
I prominently display the latest technical books in my cube for a reason.
And think how many company resources are devoted just to insure their employees, that could be better applied elsewhere.
Yes Im starting to think that forcing employers to be our health care providers is a big drag on employment - and a big deterrent to little guys starting up businesses
If I understand correctly, Israel has govt health care ( with private options). Has anyone heard that its not working?
The government should never dictate who a company hires or fires.
