A doctor and medical ethicist argues life after 75 is not worth living (Ezekiel Emanuel keeps at it)
MIT Technology Review ^ | August 21, 2019 | Stephen S. Hall

In October 2014, Ezekiel Emanuel published an essay in the Atlantic called “Why I Hope to Die at 75.” Because Emanuel is a medical doctor and chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s department of medical ethics and health policy, as well as a chief architect of Obamacare, the article stirred enormous controversy.

Emanuel vowed to refuse not only heroic medical interventions once he turned 75, but also antibiotics and vaccinations. His argument: older Americans live too long in a diminished state, raising the question of, as he put it, “whether our consumption is worth our contribution.”

Emanuel was born into a combative clan. One brother, Rahm, recently completed two terms as the controversial mayor of Chicago; another brother, Ari, is a high-profile Hollywood agent. But even given his DNA, Emanuel’s death wish was a provocative argument from a medical ethicist and health-care expert.

Emanuel, now 62, talked with me about the social implications of longevity research and why he isn’t a fan of extending life spans. I was particularly curious to get his reaction to several promising new anti-aging drugs.

It was not my call to decide what treatments my F-I-L got. It was his, and he chose every available treatment

This comment is not directed at you or your F-I-L personally, don't take it that way. It's not you or your F-I-L being improvident (or wealthy), it's "the system".

If your F-I-L was like most people, "his call" and "his choice" were funded with other people's money, statistically speaking, almost all of it the taxpayer's money.

So, the question for all is, "at what point, if any, do the taxpayers get to weigh in on F-I-L's choices?"

So far, we have chosen $20 trillion in debt to avoid this question.

Sooner or later, we will have to make a decision.

I had three relatives live to ages 96, 98 and 99. Two of them remained a joy whom I visited frequently until the day they died.

Even the other one, who was jealous, spiteful and nasty, didn’t deserve to be eliminated; she was that way her entire life. Even her cat was like that. It built character in her grown children.

Could it be the reason for all of the disinformation about the Keto Diet.

Medical community can not support KETO. It would mean having to admit that they we really wrong for decades regarding diet. Egos die hard.

I am 67, KETO, went from 217 to 170. Aerobics 3 times a week. Swim 10,000 yards a week. Feel great. Off meds. Looking to make it to at least 75.

"And is he giving this advice to RBG? What a jerk."

Great comment! I wish someone could get the chance
to pose that question to the creepy "doctor."

Yep. It’s why we don’t have health care insurance. Well, that’s secondary. The main reason is that the Lord takes very good care of us.

We celebrated Ray’s birthday yesterday. He is 103 and looks 65-70 years old. He volunteers at our local hospital doing BP test on visitors. Lives alone, drives everywhere. He is a walking, talking inspiration to all of us.

I agree. 100 years ago, we did not have to make these kind of cost decisions. Death came at a more appropriate time.

Eliminating octogenarians from politics...

Is Bernie Sanders on board with this? Feinstein? Pelosi?

Where are the courts? What does RBG have to say?

Emanuel is a medical doctor and chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s department of medical ethics

Ethics is a code of values. In a rational society the proper starting point for ethics is the concept of value. A value is that which one acts to gain or keep. Value presupposes 1) value to whom and 2) for what? The answers are to a living being to preserve and protect his own life. So life is the standard of moral value and the ultimate value.

Ever wonder why so many states are going for Euthanasia laws, but won’t use the same drugs on State Death Row Inmates, they are saving them for those of us who are chronically ill and Intractable Pain, as we are useless to them. The doctor Ezekiel Emanuel should be the first to try his HITLER plan. “Why I Hope to Die at 75.” Because Emanuel is a medical doctor and chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s department of medical ethics and health policy, as well as a chief architect of Obamacare, the article stirred enormous controversy. Emanuel vowed to refuse not only heroic medical interventions once he turned 75, but also antibiotics and vaccinations. His argument: older Americans live too long in a diminished state, raising the question of, as he put it, “whether our consumption is worth our contribution.” Related to Rahm Emanuel.
