Daughter Pens Heartbreaking Goodbye After Mom Dies of Rare Mosquito-Borne Disease
The Western Journal ^ | August 27, 2019 at 8:21am | Laura Stewart

A Massachusetts woman passed away this weekend after contracting eastern equine encephalitis, a rare mosquito-borne disease that can target the central nervous system. After her death, the woman’s daughter shared a touching tribute to the woman who taught her how to live life to the fullest.

Laurie Sylvia started noticing symptoms just six days before her death at the age of 59. According to WCVB-TV, the cause of Sylvia’s death was, in fact, EEE, though the illness is incredibly rare in the United States.

The virus, transmitted through mosquitos, causes brain infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC noted that approximately a third of all EEE patients die from the disease, and those who survive often continue to experience lasting neurological issues.

If the disease is caught before reaching the central nervous system, those infected can recover. But in Sylvia’s case, the damage to her nervous system was too extensive for doctors to remedy.

Her daughter, Jen Sylvia, posted a final goodbye to her mother on Facebook.

I wonder if the rare mosquito-borne disease vector was via an illegal alien?

I just committed a hate-crime, didn't I?

Big story on local Boston news for a week or more. IIRC she's the second person to die of EEE in Eastern Massachusetts in the last few weeks.People are being advised to stay indoors after sunset.

“I wonder if the rare mosquito-borne disease vector was via an illegal alien? “

both Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Western Equine Encephalitis have been endemic to this country for at least a half a century ... i knew a child who almost drowned when his horse collapsed from Equine Encephalitis in 1975 and trapped him in a pond when I first moved to Colorado ...

Well, blaming an illegal alien makes you racist. And, yes, that makes you a hater, which is a crime, depending on what you hate, but you also seem to harbor a resentment against or at least implicitly seem to emotionally indict the mosquito, which makes you a fascist because Trump. So yeah, you're going to jail. Depending on how you look at it, if you have something on the Clinton's, you can either be happy or upset that your pre trial autopsy will say that you hung or shot yourself, or were mugged and shot but not actually robbed.

In most states, horses need to get a shot for this disease if the horse is sold or moved into a state. One of my horses had it. And was treated for a summer. I never heard of humans getting it.

Uh, buddy -you have it backward. The disease is native to the East Coast of the United States. It's actually spread to Europe by immigration from the US. Hopefully those immigrants are legal.

When my Mother died at 85, it affected me more than I would have realized. She was literally the best person I ever knew. She had no vices and a huge amount of greatness.

Her children adored her, as did her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. She was so kind that at times it was hard to believe. She was brave. In fact Daddy and her were robbed by one of Atlanta’s fine citizens. with a gun pointed at her she refused to give him her money. Daddy had to tell her to before she would. Mother had a strong sense if right and wrong.

At her funeral I had the choir and our cousin who had a beautiful tenor voice to sing her favorite song, “Beautiful Dreamer”. A few months later at a family reunion they sang that song again in honor of Mother and it was not her family which was reuniting only hers by marriage.

I had been retired for 20 years and my good suits had been stolen by, I think my Niece. I was not about to dishonor Mother by showing up in street clothes so I bought a new suit.

I honestly don’t have the words to describe what a wonderful person she was.

We have the know-how to wipe mosquitoes from the Earth right now, critters that kill over 800,000 people a year, yet our scientists are in a dither over whether we should or not wipe ‘em out (because birds and frogs eat them). Put me in the “should” category.

we have a huge population of Portuguese people who have been here since the late 1700’s in SE MA and RI. So yeah.. that was unfounded.

As a young adult sitting around a campfire, I would load up on beer, bourbon, or both. It didn’t stop mosquitoes from biting me, but tiny explosions as they flew by the camp fire and the sound of the little buggers drunk flying into trees was somehow very rewarding in a revengeful sort of way :)

No, it was found in the deep woods for many years but made its way out to more populated areas ever since they stopped spraying DDT to kill mosquitoes.

As a kid growing up, I remember the low flying DC-3’s that were used for mosquito control.

I also remember the large truck mounted fans with sprayers attached the city would use to spray the trees along the street. It was similar to this: https://chinabesttruck.com/2018/04/22/china-pesticide-spraying-vehicle/amp/

But was bigger and mounted on an old military truck.

Well after posting my mosquito repellent theroy, I’ll say I’m sorry for the young Lady’s mother passing away. That’s a heart breaker. I did some looking and my thought was something akin to the West Nile Virus we fight here in the west. Mosquitoes carry it. We vaccinate our horses every time they are due because as short as our season is for the darn things we have mosquitoes every year. Nothing good comes from a mosquito as far as I can tell and I’m not adverse to the idea of wiping them out. It appears what we fight is different than what’s back east but the girls sorrow don’t know the difference. It was a shame. Prayers for her.

Thanks for the laugh! I thoroughly enjoyed that exchange.

Anyone can flame me if they want too, but It seems to me I was told it was vegetable oil. It seem it settles as a film on water puddles where they breed and smothers the larve trying to grow in the water. I think this was a try to make up for outlawing ddt. Hell I am getting old but skeeters suck however you kill them.
