Mormon leaders change rules against guns in church

Most members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints already knew they were discouraged from taking their guns to church on Sunday, but the church is making sure that message is crystal clear by tweaking the policy to prohibit all lethal weapons.

The previous policy called it inappropriate to have weapons on church property. It still includes an exception for law enforcement officers.

The clarification comes one year after a fatal shooting inside one of its churches in rural Nevada and as religions around the country grapple with how to deal with gun violence that has spread to places of worship.

The change went into effect the first week of August and a letter explaining it was first sent to local leaders in Texas and shared with members there, said church spokesman Daniel Woodruff. The impetus was a new Texas law that takes effect soon that makes it clearer in state law that licensed handgun holders can carry weapons in churches, synagogues and other houses of worship.

Well, now all the mental nut cases, jihadists, etc. know which churches aren’t armed and easy targets. Better theirs, than ours. Ours is armed to the teeth.

I like the sound bite I heard on the subject. “Never enter a gun-free zone unarmed.”

Even though it won’t matter against rifles and some pistol calibers like 5.7 and 7.62x25mm Tok. They blow through level IIIa armor.

These kind of ‘church leaders’ must believe Jesus errored when he told Peter to bring the sword. But they know better than God.

Interesting cross-current.

Our county Sherriff has sponsored programs which actively encourages "Places of Worship" to have armed deacons at services. The programs are non-denominational. A variety of training is available from private sources, and there are certain minimum standards and procedures suggested.

There are similar programs in a few neighboring counties. The State Governor (a Democrat) is reportedly quite annoyed with them.

Then again, 55 of 62 Sheriffs have publicly declined to enforce the 2013 Gun Control Laws and a similar number appears to be willing to refuse enforcement of the pending "Red Flag" laws that take effect in 2020.

They should anyways regardless of the gun issue. They claim to believe the Bible, yet claim to believe the book of mormon too. That doesn’t fly. The Bible is crystal clear on this among many other things.

Most Evangelical and Charismatic churches have armed ushers, deacons, clergy, musicians and others, as well as off-duty policemen.

Fully agree.

Outside of a couple police officer members, my church is a criminal empowerment zone too.

I live in a state that severely limits CCW and even though virtually everyone there is very conservative, they refuse to allow armed members

What is wrong with these people? Advertising public and private areas as “Gun free zones” are just putting the cross hairs on themselves. That’s just the unfortunate reality.

I may agree with your overall tendency here, but that's not a strong Scripture verse at all, to make your point.

After the disciples said they had two swords, Jesus said "Enough."

For the 12 of them.

And after Jesus' right-hand man, Peter, cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest, Jesus actually healed the guy's ear, and then said to Peter (again) "Enough!"

It's not exactly a stirring call to arming yourself to repel aggressors.

In fact, the reason Jesus gave at the time for getting two swords, and two being "enough," was because "this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, ‘He was counted among the wicked’."

He knew he'd be called criminals, so He said (maybe making an ironic point), they may as well look the part.

Other than that, carry on.
