Our diets are fueling flames in the Amazon (barf Alert)
The Hill ^ | 25th August 2019 | SHAHIR MASRI

The Amazon has made headlines this month as fires rip across the region. While this is the dry season for the area, during which fires are common, fires have nonetheless reached unprecedented highs this season — up 80 percent compared to last year. As the Amazon burns, the world has lit up with despair and outrage, with hashtags such as #PrayForTheAmazon going viral.

As the fires and emotional uproar continue, one naturally wonders "who is to blame?" Of course, the obvious cause is "human ignition," as these fires are mostly due to farmers and ranchers using flames to clear forests and shrublands (a common practice in tropical regions). However, the underlying reason for farming-related fires is also important to pursue.

Some news reports point to climate change, as hotter and drier temperatures have contributed to the increased flammability of landscapes not only in Brazil, but all over the world. Others point to Brazil's new far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who champions the exploitation of the Amazon for economic gain and who’s government has scaled back efforts to fight illegal logging, ranching and mining — thus emboldening more farmers, ranchers, and land-grabbers to clear forestlands.

While these are important contributing factors, the evident international concern for the Amazon that has surfaced this month is not without irony. As we look to blame ranchers, politicians, and climate for these fires, we overlook a glaring paradox. That is, underlying the long-term destruction of the Amazon rain forest for decades has been global demand for meat products.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Brazil remains the world's number one beef exporter, accounting for nearly 20 percent of global exports, and still growing. As of 2018, Brazilian beef exports reached a record 1.6 million tonnes. Some reports suggest as much as 80 percent

NYT has an article proving the fires are normal at this time of year; farmers/ranchers prepping land for the spring. And actually, this year is not as bad as it has been in past years.

This guy did a bit of breakdown on it and it being fake news/fake outrage:

Also, blaming beef production is contradicted in the NYT article as they note that it is SOYBEAN production that is the problem.

Lets just try to understand biology a little bit. Forests burn! If they are not allowed to burn for a while, then they burn very big, a little bit later. If the forests are allowed to burn naturally, the large trees generally survive while the underbrush is turned to ash. If humans stop the burning, then the underbrush gets larger and when it burns, it takes out the largest trees with it.

There is no problem in the Amazon. The forest is doing what it has always done. Burn!

I guess I am as dense as the forest. What does setting fires that are being used to clear farm land to feed their people have to do with climate change? And if the “far-right” president favorites the use of land that is needed for the feeding of his people by limiting illegal logging, ranching, and mining to assist that, then what is the complaint?

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Brazil remains the world’s number one beef exporter, accounting for nearly 20 percent of global exports, and still growing. As of 2018, Brazilian beef exports reached a record 1.6 million tonnes. Some reports suggest as much as 80 percent of Amazon forest destruction is related to cattle ranching. Who’s report? They seem to forget that if 20% of the world’s beef comes from there, they need to clear land to herd it.

SHAHIR MASRI, the writer of the article is a climate activist at UC Irvine and a speaker for climate control. He is a ecology hit man for the liberals educated at UCLA and a speaker for political change under the Citizen’s Climate Lobby that has gone after congress especially since the house went liberal.

CCL’s founder, Marshall Saunders, was the inventor of the five levers of political will each one consistent with the liberal playbook::

Lobbying: We train citizens how to lobby in support of our Carbon Fee and Dividend proposal by building friendly relationships with our federally elected representatives.
lobbying is one of the levers of political will

Media relations: We train citizens how to engage with and influence the media. We write letters to the editors and op-eds, meet with editorial boards and work to place stories in all forms of media.

Grassroots outreach: We recruit and educate the public on climate solutions, citizen advocacy and how to participate with one’s government.

Grasstops outreach: We seek to educate, build partnerships with and gain the support of community leaders and non-governmental organizations, both nationally and locally.

Chapter development: It is through the growth and management of the local CCL group/chapter, that it becomes possible to push on the other four levers for building political will.

Sound familiar?

For you people out there who are getting great results using a Low Carb / Keto type diet (the big ones being weight loss and diabetes reversal), but still wondering why you’re treated as if you have Leprosy by just about everyone around you, including your own doctor, this is much of the problem. For to give up carbs, it almost always means eating significantly more meat - and they DO NOT want that to go mainstream - in fact, they’re trying their damnedest to force people in the other direction (to not eating any meat...and get much sicker, by the way).

What a load of Gaia crap, I bet more hectares of rainforest have been cleared to grow crops for biofuel production than human consumption.

Trying to make us feel guilt. Eating that hamburger makes a forest go up in flames? I don’t think so.

“Although the majority of Brazilian beef exports go to China and Hong Kong, the Unites States, European Union, and other nations nonetheless have roles to play, as we all fit into the picture of global demand”

of course ... if only the U.S. would quit eating our own beef and instead give it to the China and Hong Kong, then farmers would quit burning Brazilian forests and “climate change” would stop or something ...

Fire. Fire is to blame. It tends to destroy everything combustible.
