It’s not even the hardest wood in North America.

But it’s hard enough to give you pain for a month.

Yes it was......clean, pretty and no fear walking downtown.....
....I haven’t been there in 5 years and hate to think of what downtown is turning into!
I have a relative that works close to Congress Ave

Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Texas has had a influx of CA’ians. They bring their lib ideas and run for office to change everything into what they left behind.

They move in and run the price of housing sky high. At one time, exactly 50% of the homes in our subdivision were for sale. Kalifornicans were snatching them up left and right and THAT is why my property taxes are so RIDICULOUS.

Sheila, we haven’t forgotten that rampage you went on when your darling son couldn’t find a single black university to attend in the whole state. Snort, just look out your window! Texas has seven or so and a couple he could have commuted to. Prairie View A&M was started in the 1800s!!!

All these idiot mayors and councilmen keep following the same failed liberal playbook for the homeless and it fails every time. Giuliani and NYC showed them all the way to deal with the the homeless but they refuse to make the hard choices.

It’s a shame what is happening to our nicest cities and towns. Can’t Trump do something about it?

Don't know that Austin would be any worse with Mayor Leslie.

You mean Texas or Austin specific? Outside of George P I don’t
think any live in Austin or that area. GP holds a statewide elected
position so I assume he lives in Austin area.

It is often a poor tool that has but one use.

But those advocating “Hickory Showers” here need to be reminded that it is not, in fact, 1962, and you must assume every square inch of ground in the front of a retail dining/shopping area is being recorded by multiple cameras - if not for Big Brother use by the government, then by the shopowners or landowners themselves because of the plague of unlimited liability lawsuits. Either way, you will be on camera, you WILL be charged with a felony and you WILL be thoroughly screwed by the justice system. Your assets WILL be seized to pay compensation (because, hey, you actually have some) and since you aren’t a protected minority or perhaps because you were assaulting one, you will be spending hard time in prison. No free probation for you.

Austin is the San Francisco of the South.

Actually, no, not at all. Austin is the a$$h*le of the country. Despite the stereotypes of San Francisco, there are only some areas that are messed up. Much of the city is rich, beautiful, having scenic views and many upscale neighborhoods with trendy restaurants, stores and museums, beaches, trails, lakes and gardens. The crappy areas are limited to a few downtown neighborhoods.

Austin is more like Berkeley California. Ugly, a bunch of young bums and a few strips of mediocre stores and bars. I've been to Austin many times, and there is pretty much nothing there, similar to Berkeley with a college campus and young students wandering around. Austin is a wannabe town, and nothing more.

Justice is a bad joke now.

Today is nothing like the era of Mr.District Attorney, an OTR show.

I sort of have a similar problem with types hanging around.

There is a large metal building that belongs to an in-law that lets me use it as a makeshift garage. It’s in a good area.

However, I try to police the place regularly. There is an alley between it and some woods.

More than a few times recently, I find buckets, milk crates and a few cigarette remains where some types from the shops around sneak out of sight.

I’d like to find some way to turn people off from using it. It isn’t my property though. Getting the in-law to spend money on fences and some general repairs isn’t going anywhere.

I can’t see ever being able to buy it.

I’m in the process of slowly migrating things out.

A couple of the pet projects may have to live at my parent’s place.

You’re right, but I believe it is accepted that there isn’t money to treat them; here in the Northeast the closing of facilities is widely blamed for the problem.

They closed them originally not because of money but politics

Geraldo Rivera.....google it .....he single handed got the notion of committing wandering crazy folks ended

We had state mental institutions with campuses or campi as Rush says

It ain’t perfect but it beats crazy folks talking to people who aren’t there walking the streets pooping or cutting one another

The drug and alcohol addicted on the streets who overlap is more complicated

Often they are street hobos by choice

There are definitely those who avoid facilities (often because of drug addiction), but up here we live in states that can barely afford to maintain roads - how would we pay for these facilities?

For under $60 and with careful shopping on the List of Craig, the Book of Face and the Bay of E, you can get:

A couple of used game/trail cameras.
A bunch of dummy security cameras.
A couple of signs indicating no loitering and no smoking.

Put up the signs where the cig butts and such are. Install the game cameras to overlook the area, then put the fake cameras in obvious view, aimed to overlook the game cameras.

Thank goodness for online shopping so we don’t have to drive to Austin. The malls just aren’t worth the hassle. The traffic is horrible. You can’t pay me enough to go to Sixth St. and I’d rather do the touristy thing in San Antonio. And it has sprawled out miles and miles and miles. Glad it didn’t get Amazon or it’d be 10 times worse.

The only time we go now is just to take care of paperwork that has to be done in person and medical so nothing for fun. It gets more depressing each time. 4-5 years ago was the worst. It had a downright creepy weird vibe. Very communist. 1970s Russia was more cheerful, btdt. Downtown offices were dark and dingy. Government and private office doors were locked and you had to call ahead to be allowed in or someone had to escort you and they acted like you were some weirdo just being there. Several had no directories at the elevators to discourage people from showing up unannounced.

Used to be a treat to eat out in the city and try something different. It’s been 10 years since we’ve done that. We don’t even take time to eat when we HAVE to be there. It’s get what needs done and get the heck out as fast as possible.
