Trump vows to 'always uphold the Second Amendment' amid ongoing talks on gun laws

President Trump on Thursday told supporters in New Hampshire that he would "always uphold the Second Amendment" and suggested that the construction of new mental health facilities would help curb gun violence.

The president lamented the lack of mental health institutions as he spoke about the need to keep guns away from people with mental illnesses. The comments come as the White House and Congress examine new gun laws in the wake of recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas.

"It's not the gun that pulls the trigger. It's the person that pulls the trigger," Trump said, earning a roar of approval from the crowd in Manchester.

He suggested that the closure of mental institutions led to an influx of sick individuals on the streets. Trump proposed building new facilities to get those individuals help, and implied that it would assist in the fight against gun violence.

But the president, wary of upsetting his base supporters, assured the crowd that he would not allow new laws to infringe on their access to guns.

"We can’t make it harder for good, solid, law-abiding citizens to protect themselves," he said. "We will always uphold the right to self-defense, and we will always uphold the Second Amendment."

Trump's comments on Thursday night underscore the complicated nature of ongoing talks on background checks, so-called "red flag" laws and other measures to reduce gun violence after the latest spate of mass shootings.

The president has in recent days insisted that he favors stronger background checks. But he has voiced support for similar measures in the past only to back off amid pressure from the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The NRA has opposed the gun measures being floated by lawmakers in recent weeks, and it's unclear whether a background check bill co-sponsored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) has enough GOP support to pass the Senate.

Conservative viewpoints = hate language = red flags = gun confiscation.

"The president has in recent days insisted that he favors stronger background checks."

I think there should be a twist. More thorough info in NICS, including access to pre age 18 issues. But, any inquiry from an FFL would only show the request was made from an FFL. No gun type etc.

In other words, hamper the illegal registry the government is attempting to construct.

Can I buy a simple suppressor without a $200 tax, comprehensive background check, and 1 year wait for bureaucracy?
Can I buy an M4 by any legal means?
No.
Our 2nd Amendment rights are not protected.
The Constitution presumes private ownership of _BATTLESHIPS_ (under “Letters of Marque” clause), and I can’t even own a standard military rifle.

Sorry to be unclear. I was basically agreeing with you.

If the president has not called for Red Flag laws, then it is unfair for someone to ask “Has he stopped called for Red Flag laws?” What would be the right answer? Yes? No? Neither answer fits. The question is a trap.

Same with the classic — “Has this politician stopped beating his wife?” What’s the right answer? Yes? No? Neither will sound good. The question is a trap.

It’s wise to be vigilant and protective of our rights. Nonetheless, this is very encouraging.

Yup. Much of it IS mental health. I believe many become anesthetized to violence from being bombarded with blood and guts watching tv and playing gory video games. It would be nice if producers self policed their films against graphic violence.

“...They have an endless supply of zombies that all they have to do is give them a gun and drop them off at the nearest mall....”
They’ve proven the MK ULTRA program has evolved quite well from the original experiments. Usually, the MK ULTRA wind-up toys usually need a “handler” to ensure that their little “prepared” zombie “hears the right voices” and is pointed in the right direction. But other than that, yeah, you’re right on.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he supported Israel’s decision to bar Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) from entering the nation over their support for a boycott of Israel.

He’s running for re-election.

He will be pushing amnesty for illegal aliens the day after he’s re-elected.

He should be replaced before he can give the Democrats a permanent majority.

“The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.” —Justice Joseph Story (1833)
