Developers say local leaders in the Hudson Valley are blocking a housing project in order to keep out Hasidic Jews.
In a peaceful corner of the Hudson Valley, a broad expanse of land sits at the ready for hundreds of homes ranging between 2,500 and 3,400 square feet, with views of the surrounding hills. There will be a recreation center and tennis courts, and nearly half of the development’s 117 acres will be kept as open space.
But if it were up to town officials, the houses would never be built. They openly fret about the size and density of the 431-unit development, the Greens at Chester, and even confess wariness about the likely intended home buyers: Hasidic Jews.
“There’s nobody on the board, there’s nobody that works in the town, there’s nobody that wants this development to go through,” Alexander Jamieson, the former town supervisor of Chester, said at a public meeting in May 2018. “There’s nobody.”
Town officials have repeatedly placed obstacles in the developers’ path since they bought the land in 2017: restrictions on the size of the houses they can build, delays on issuing building permits and a request to relocate the main road by 10 feet.

This is happening with the development my inlaws live in. The Hasidim are trying to buy the golf course to put up housing. No one is very happy about it. My left wing Jewish mother in law calls them cockroaches and after I remind her about tolerance, she shuts up and blames Trump for something.

At the risk of sounding naive, why would anyone not want a community of these people?
If the expected buyers were blacks, and the locals wanted to keep them out, there would be a (justified) uproar.
A large percentage of Hasidim are on public assistance. The town probably prefers people who will contribute more to the tax base.

They don’t like infidels and have peculiar religious practices. But they are not muzzies so it’s ok to discriminate against them, in the minds of many.

I’ve recently heard 2nd hand stories about southern New Jersey and how the Hasidic communities have ‘run down’ some neighborhoods. I was surprised as you are.

In the past, before modern welfare programs, they also had to earn a living.
In many of the enclaves where these Hasidim live in the U.S., the prevailing culture is remarkably similar to what you see with radical Muslims in Great Britain. They have large families and spend their entire lives on public assistance, and an overwhelming number of the men are “biblical scholars” instead of being gainfully employed.

Because they are Un-American separatists. They wish to live under their separatist, strict religious codes, while simultaneously milking the welfare system, AND block voting to push aside all others.
Have state funds pay for everything, while avoiding their own property taxes through religious exemptions.
Google “Kiryas Joel”. Read the sign. Seems innocent enough, but its’ actually a warning to outsiders.
Note the town of New Square in NY. Highest per-capita poverty in the state. Why? Dads don’t work regular jobs because they are “Students” at Yeshiva. Lots of side Cash flows through these places. (The Velocity of Money takes on new meanings in insular communities.) They have large families due to religious obligations. Dad has to perform his duty whenever Mom asks.
