A new independent audit found multiple errors and flaws in the rollout of Californias automated motor voter system
Californias ambitious effort to automate voter registration at Department of Motor Vehicle offices produced almost 84,000 duplicate records and more than twice that number with political party mistakes, according to an audit released Friday by state officials. The analysis covered just the first five months of the new motor voter program, which was launched in April 2018. It found a wide array of problems with the rollout of the DMV system, including a limited amount of testing as well as inconsistent and confusing lines of communication between the state agencies involved in its creation. Many of the findings align with documents discovered by the Los Angeles Times in an investigation earlier this year of the motor voter program.
Auditors reviewed more than 3 million voter registration files, comparing records from both DMV and Californias secretary of state. They found 83,684 duplicate voter registrations, a mistake attributed to inconsistencies in what was listed for voters political party preferences.
This action resulted in no impact to voter eligibility, Keely Martin Bosler, director of the state Department of Finance, wrote in a letter on Friday to Gov. Gavin Newsoms Cabinet secretary.
Separately, the audit found additional errors in voter registration related to party preference. Investigators wrote that 171,145 DMV records contained entries indicating a persons political party but no such associated designation within the data received by state elections officials.
These errors added additional workload to state and local elections officials, as registration records impacted by these errors had to be researched, corrected, and in some cases canceled, Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a letter to Bosler on Friday. He said the mistakes threatened to undermine public confidence in the program.

They can’t win if they don’t cheat.
Let me guess. All Rat registrations.
Only 84,000? Talk about a fart in a whirlwind...
So, they’ll need to print 252,000 more ballots.
That’s just scratching the surface. Dig deeper.
ALL mail in ballots Im sure!!!
Hmm. I wonder if any registered Republicans in CA will get 2 or more ballots in the mail.
Can you imagine what an independent, honest audit would turn up?
About as much of a chance of that as an honest audit of the Federal Reserve.
There 30 to 50 times that many.
Oh, he doesn't need to worry about that. Some of us have had no confidence in the California voting system for decades. Motor voter, no verification of eligibility, routine irregularities such as finding boxes of ballots floating in the San Francisco bay... yeah, not much cause for confidence there.
“There 30 to 50 times that many.”
I have little doubt you are correct, and little doubt that most or all of them voted D.
Heh, voted since 1980 and never have received an extra ballot and most likely never will.
It’s a feature, not a bug.
I’m sure my wife’s and my votes will be counted in California for 2020, despite having moved out of state last year.
Now I’m worried. We left CA in 2010. I wonder if anyone has been voting using our identities. Next week I’ll try to check on that.
wait until they check the death records against the voter list. LOL
