California governor signs law requiring presidential candidates to release tax returns

California's Democratic governor signed a law Tuesday requiring presidential candidates to release their tax returns to appear on the state's primary ballot, a move aimed squarely at Republican President Donald Trump.

But even if the law withstands a likely legal challenge, Trump could avoid the requirements by choosing not to compete in California's primary. With no credible GOP challenger at this point, he likely won't need California's delegates to win the Republican nomination.

Moonbeam Brown vetoed the same bill. This should be thrown out by the courts for exceeding the qualifications for POTUS listed in the Constitution.

This speaks to why they don’t like the electoral college. When Trump has no chance of winning the state anyway, he can ignore them and focus on the states he CAN turn. And California can only pass laws that affect California.

I’m sure they’ll revisit this bill when a favored liberal billionaire wants to run for President.

How about checking if candidates for President are natural born citizens as required by the Constitution?

The new law only affects primary ballot access so Trump with no real need to win CA GOP delegates can simply not run in the GOP Primary in CA.

Clearly unconstitutional, even at a casual glance.

The Supreme Court has already ruled that States can't add additional requirements to those listed in the US Constitution for Federal Offices, including POTUS.

This is why term limits for Congress were never enacted, even though they were passed in several States.

So, this is "lawfare", it's part of the endless use of law to wreck Trump's presidency.

Serious question for Libs: do you think we are every going to forget of forgive how you have treated President Trump?

With any luck we can find some Conservative Heros to tie any and all future Dem Presidents in knots with nonsense lawsuits.

The Politics of 'bad faith' can go both ways. Lets hope we find people strong enough to fight fire with fire.

Since the parties determine requirements to participate, what right does the state think it has to set requirements. I seem to recall discussion of party-level vs. state vs. national level.

The object of this BS is to bog down and make Trump waste resources.
Nothing more.

While moombeam didn't veto this same bill, he vetoed a similar one. His reasonsing...it's a slippery slope. And he's right, saying: “Today we require tax returns, but what would be next? Five years of health records? A certified birth certificate? High school report cards? And will these requirements vary depending on which political party is in power?” [1]

Imagine if Red states required liberal candidates to provide 10 years of medical records (to include what prescriptions they are taking) as well as a certified long form birth certificate and any police records going back 20 years.

I kinda agree out of principle. Take him off the ballot, it won’t change the outcome at all.

Your state income tax at work, Cali. Nice to know they’re spending state resources on TDS crusades instead of helping people who live in the squalor of Downtown Anywhere, CA.

This will be shot down by the USSC. Already adjudicated, states cannot add any additional tests to put some one on the Federal ballot.

a move aimed squarely at Republican President Donald Trump.

California's legislative and executive branches have hereby declared that a bill of attainder is constitutional.

Let's see if the California judicial branch goes full retard.

If they all agree, it would be OK for their subjects to rid themselves of the scum BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
