SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Police are investigating a fatal shooting reported Tuesday morning at a Walmart in Southaven, Mississippi.

A Walmart employee told WHBQ-TV workers were inside during the shooting. Officials confirmed 60 employees were in the store when the incident took place.

Officials have not released what led to the shooting.

Rasco told WHBQ-TV the suspected gunman was also shot twice. The suspect's condition was not immediately known. He was taken to Regional One Health Medical Center in Memphis for treatment of his injuries.

A police officer was also injured in the shooting. The officer, who was not identified, was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto for treatment of injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. He was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting, which stopped the bullet, according to WHBQ-TV.

2 killed, 2 wounded in shooting at Walmart in Mississippi

Updated on: July 30, 2019 / 12:38 PM / CBS/AP

A gunman fatally shot two people and wounded a police officer before he was shot and arrested Tuesday at a Walmart in northern Mississippi, authorities said. The Southaven Police officer was hit in his bulletproof vest and was expected to be OK, CBS affiliate WREG-TV reports.

The officer shot the gunman, who was hospitalized in an unknown condition, DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco told WATN-TV. WREG-TV reports both of the people who died Tuesday morning were Walmart employees.

While the gunman hasn’t been identified, WREG-TV reports he used to work at the Walmart. The station reports he was suspended Monday after pulling a knife on a customer.

What does it matter whether it happens in Chicago or Mississippi? Evil is real. God’s judgment is real. And this nation is in crisis. These are unacceptable stats.

Suspended, not fired ?

That tells me something, right there.

What matters is demographics: what’s rare in Mississippi is common in Chicago... why?

Southaven is just over the state line from Memphis, really just a suburb.

West Virginia currently has the worst opioid epidemic of all the states. Pick your poison. Too many people dying and it needs to be addressed.

He should have been charged and locked up for pulling a knife on someone.

The suspect may be black but regardless Southaven and the surrounding area which is predominantly white has a huge problem with meth heads and the opioids crisis that affects whites, blacks, Hispanics ...etc.

Pray for the victims fa

Southaven is a suburb of Memphis just across the state line. It might be predominantly white but just barely so and Memphis is encroaching more every day. I’ve been in that Walmart many times an the clientele is about 50/50.

20 years ago you moved to Southaven to get away from the ghetto, now you go another ten miles south past Hernando.

Notice that none of the articles mention the shooters race, that should tell you what it is. If he was white it would be mentioned in every sentence.

> What does it matter whether it happens in Chicago or Mississippi?

Because policy, practice, culture, law, regulation, societal norms, institutions, etc. may differ between Chicago and Mississipi. And outcomes in the human condition may differ, for better, or for worse, between Chicago and Mississipi. And these outcomes may have a causal basis in those policies, practices, laws, etc.

And yes. Evil is real and God’s judgment is real. But in the mean time, we need to decide such things as whether we should have elected school boards, bicameral legislatures, two-strikes laws, strong state powers, youth soccer on Sundays, and so on.

Ok well opioid crisis is killing more people than even gang violence, which is already horrendous. With West Virginia leading nation. All these societal ills are unacceptable.

Two people killed...

This counts as a mass shooting, yes? Or do we have to wait and see if the perp is a rebel flag-toting redneck first?

"why?"

Drugs. Walmart is *not* testing new employees for drugs, at least in some stores. Same with many other employers. As our nation relaxes policies against drug abuse, meth, ecstasy, benzo (e.g., Xanax) opioid and other drug abuse is expanding.

In areas that are mostly white, we more commonly see the indicators in bizarre grooming and dress, tattoos, sexual identity confusion, liberalism, pit bulls, tantrums on roads, etc.
