10-year-old boy charged with assault after dodgeball injury: 'Our kids are racially targeted'
Yahoo Noose ^ | July 29, 2019 | Kamilah Newton

The mom of a 10-year-old boy received the shock of her life recently: a phone call from her local juvenile court, explaining that her son would be charged with aggravated assault, months after a playground game of dodgeball at his elementary school.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Cameishi Lindley, mother of soon-to-be-fifth-grader Bryce Lindley, told 7 Action News about the call, received from the Wayne County Juvenile Court in Canton, Mich., on July 24.

Now, because the boy being punished is black and the boy who was injured is white, some critics are calling the incident racist, while others — including celebrity comedian DL Hughley, who called the charge “ridiculous” — are coming to the boy’s general defense.

I saw that too. My high school was awful when it came to health conditions. Basically, if you didn’t have cancer of some sort, you were treated like everyone else. Having been on my way into kidney failure, I was still forced to participate in PE even though my doctor had written numerous letters to exempt me. Apparently I had to make up F’s for PE from the previous year, when I was also supposed to have received medical exemptions; the teacher was notorious for treating “fat kids” as if they were just lazy and for picking favorites (I was heavy, but h ultimately lost 100# in water wright by 18). PE is mandatory in IL, and she felt that I didn’t deserve to be releases from having to participate. The chemo-like medication didn’t seem to sway her either.

It is irresponsible either way to allow your child to take part in recess rough-housing if they have a severe medical condition. I have gotten hit with my fair share of rubber kickball balls, and they damn well hurt and cause damage, but don’t let your kid partake.

Ultimately I need more information, such as both kids’ histories when it comes to bullying, school discipline, and so forth. There really isn’t enough here to make a solid judgment.

I’m not going to bother correcting my spelling errors. I either missed them in proof-reading or my phone kept auto-correcting to the wrong word.

Lame.

Missing Information Syndrome.
1) Was this an organized game during school, with “rules”?
2) Did the rules forbid deliberately targeting heads and particularly faces? No school in the last 50 years would be stupid enough to allow that.
3) The article tell us the aspiring thug is only 10.
4) No age is given for the targeted/injured kid. Instead, there’s a tricky statement, “some 10 year old kids were playing”, so we’ll assume ALL the kids were 10.
5) Maybe I’ve come to expect Clinton dishonesty from all reportage, but doesn’t the charge begin to make sense if an older child deliberately slammed a younger one in the face, in violation of school rules? Not saying that happened; just suspicious.

According to the video, the one kid has a medical condition which makes him susceptible to head injuries. If that is the case, then her kid has to be aware not to engage in such games.

The mother says she advised the school of her child’s condition after previous incidences of her child being injured. OK. ...but nothing presented makes that relevant to the child who threw the ball. Nothing in the story suggests the play was involuntary on her son’s part.

Given the news articles inclusion of the stats about racial makeup of those punished, it is not unlikely that there is some biased reporting here, but if not, this more seems like a case of “crazy mama”, a diverting school district, and some poor judgement from the local police.

The description of what happened as “dodgeball” could well be a deliberate misrepresentation of a vicious assault. Need more info.

This is why we need segregated dodge ball.

So how close was the boy who threw the ball? And did the target know he was playing or get hit in the back of the head?

We played co-ed dodge ball at maybe the width of a basketball court plus sidelines. Boy jocks with strong arms fifty pounds heavier than picked-last little girl me. They didn’t go easy at anyone, so you learned to dodge for sure. Never saw an injury.

".... injured child’s mother....says her son had a previous medical condition that made him susceptible to head injuries...."

Then what the hale was he playing dodgeball for?

Sounds like an unforced error to me.

How is some kid charged with assault when the object of the game of dodgeball is to hit someone with the ball?

No kidding! Kids are naughty little brats at times. Punishment is required. But a trial? He will not understand a bit of it and will grow up hating the entire justice system.

Look we played dodge ball when we were kids. Sometimes the ball doesn’t go where intended. Once I was running back to base tripped slid into the piano in the corner. Cut my head wide open. We didn’t go crying to someone he hit me too hard.. My gosh things happen at play that wasn’t intended to happen. Friend of mine was swinging on the play ground did a double back flip landed on his wrist broke both wrist. Walked to the school opened the double doors went to the nurses station. School did not get sued either. It was an accident!!!

In a fair world, I would expect teachers to be protective of their students, and honor medical exemptions. I forget sometimes it’s not a fair world. I’m like you though...I need more info about the kids. It could’ve been an honest accident. It could’ve been meant to hurt the kid. Or, mom might’ve been able to handle the medical bills initially, but now the bills are getting out of hand and she needs the other kid’s family to step up. Who knows?

I have been an emergency sub (you know the 6:00 a.m. phone call) for our local district for a few years. The 5th on up can be out of control on this dodgeball/townball thing. Some are “aiming for the kill” if you know what I mean. You can see it in their persona. I set the rules at the beginning very explicitly . . . even if the regular teacher hasn’t.

> Sounds like the littlengoon used an impromptu game of “dodgeball” to take out his hostilities on a weaker child

This is also known as “playing dodgeball”.

It’s been a substitute for yard fighting at least since I measured my age with one digit.

Mom can pull her little petunia out of sports if she can’t handle him growing up. Yeah, we all faced the horrors of baseball, football, dodge-ball,... it was such a terrible thing to have to deal with when I was young and defenseless!

/s

She should start a “Pussies Unite” chapter and make her son troop leader.

That just reminded Me of Rottweiler I met in Arkansas. Pulled in the driveway to start a Satellite TV Install. As I gather tools and parts that BIG BOY comes running from around the house- carrying a Bowling Ball in His mouth !! Now remember I’m carrying tools on one side and dish parts on the other and this Rottie runs right up in front of Me and I’m talking to Him and He Drops the ball which just missed My feet.

Then He starts Sniffing at My pockets, then I remembered I’ve got Milk-bones on hand so I dig one out and hand it off to Him and head towards the Front Door, I look behind Me and here comes that Bowling Ball towing a Rottie. I set stuff down and pickup that BB and IT’S HEAVY which explains His neck being bigger than the rest of Him. So I roll the BB as hard as I can He runs off chasing after it.

I’m talking to the Homeowner about the Satellite Install and am also told Rottie will chase and retrieve that BB ALL DAY if He can find anybody sucker enough. I must have rolled that Damned Bowling Ball 25 times that Afternoon.

He would hook His Teeth in the holes in the ball- I’ll bet that BB weight was 30 pounds if it was 1 pound, yet He took those Milk Bones so Gently with just His front teeth. But I would not want to get bitten by Him.

“He can always plead not guilty and ask for a jury trial.”

There is generally no right to a jury trial in juvenile court.
