Saudi women eye new freedoms

Currently, Saudi women still require the approval of a male relative or spouse to obtain a passport, travel outside Saudi Arabia, or even study abroad. It’s a patriarchal system controlling women’s lives that has left the kingdom out of step with the rest of the world for decades.

But the country is set to end those travel restrictions. Saudi newspaper Okaz recently announced that the government has formed a committee to review “ending guardianship of a minor at the age of 18,” discontinuing a system that has treated adult women functionally and legally as minors for their entire lives.

...They (Gov't officials) link the reforms to the crown prince’s Vision 2030, a road map that looks to increase the percentage of women in the workforce to 30% and to grow the country’s private sector.

“Saudi official sources have confirmed that the move to end the male guardianship of women over age 18 is “imminent,”

“they say authorities are fine-tuning regulations to “put Saudi Arabia on track to become a modern economy and a society where all its citizens can achieve their aspirations.”

“are women allowed to drive there yet?”

As of June 2018.

This is a much bigger step though. Kind of the big one.

The big one will be when women are actually allowed to leave Saudi Arabia without needing anyone’s permission.

The Saudis are developing a new resort city on the Red Sea (a little North of Medina), where International standards will be allowed - including allowing Saudi women to wear bikinis.

“The big one will be when women are actually allowed to leave Saudi Arabia without needing anyone’s permission.”

That, and much more, are included in ending guardianship at age 18. It is essentially full individual freedom for adult women, under the law.

There was a tried and true method for bringing bibles into the Kingdom.

Wrap the Bible in women’s underwear and it will always be passed. The customs checkers will overlook the Bible

Presently, there are endless internet sites where Bibles may be had.

The Saudis have been importing beauties for decades. The world is in for treat. Arab girls themselves can be some real beauties, and there is nothing else quite like a real Arabian belly dance.

“Oh, this should drive the oppressive mullahs crazy....”

Bottom line: They better do as they are told.

Several high profile Saudi preachers were summarily imprisoned - some threatened with execution. One of them had about two million online followers.

There was always a strong element of them preaching the party line - just like in any other totalitarian police state dictatorship. Most were just singing the party line before, and will start singing the new party line right on cue.

My guess is they have learned a lesson from the incredible success and wealth of the United Arab Emirates. Plus, the US is has almost as much oil reserves (fracking) and has vastly reduced imports from the Saudis.

Also, being the largest producer of natural gas and an exporter has made us almost energy independent as the US and other countries switch to gas for energy production. They're biggest customer no longer needs them, and the Saudi royalty can anticipate future losses in oil exports. This is all good stuff.

Strategically, the Saudis have an urgent need to diversify from their dependence on oil.

"Strategically, the Saudis have an urgent need to diversify from their dependence on oil."

Exactly my point. What else does Saudi Arabia royalty export to keep them in their palaces? Sand? Dubai and Abu Dhabi are huge tourist destinations for Europeans and others due to their lax Sharia law enforcement and a semi-secular type government. Other emirates within the UAE have more restrictive policies.

Saudi Arabia has a bigger Gulf coastline not to mention Red Sea and could be even bigger in tourism as they become more westernized. Oman and Yemen also have big coastlines, but I wouldn't bet on Yemen as yet. Again, if the Saudis keep on this liberty track, it will be good for the region. I never thought I'd see them talking to Israel, but they are.

If you pay attention you would know he Saudi economy has exports other than oil

Airconditioners, float glass, steel buildings to name three.

Recently, a joint venture of Saudi Aramco and Dow Chemical built the largest chemical project on earth constructed in one go. It involved 26 prime contractors for the construstion and an endless number of vendors and sub contractors.
