An excellent point. While I'm always frustrated by the amount of ignorance expressed on FR threads about energy, there's also the opportunity for "teachable moments", as I'd imagine you would agree based on your screen name.

For example, not many consumers of electricity really know where it comes from. Hydroelectric power generation has been highly subsidized for decades and produces half of the power from renewable sources, but wind has grown to nearly the same level in recent years. Just as was the case with hydro, the incentives to invest in wind will pay dividends for many years to come. A common problem with renewables is the resource (water, wind, or sunlight) is not always greatest near population centers where demand is highest. That has been addressed through construction of many new power transmission lines, which benefit ALL forms of generation and pave the way for new ones.

With wind you need a back power system. So it is very expansive.

I wish we had your problem here in CA. You’re paying around 9 cents/kwh, we’re paying over 30!

If the wind don’t blow and the sun don’t glow the power don’t flow

In Calif, we got wind power too. And our prime electric rates (we have tiers now) are from 4pm to 9pm at 4x the ‘usual’ rate. Not to mention forced blackouts. So how’s it going in Texas, rate-wise? Did your electric bills go down or up?

We moved from California to Texas last fall just before the time of use rate system was implemented in our area. For a 2,400 sq ft two-story house a bit north of San Jose, we were seeing $310/mo average monthly energy bills during the summer months that past five years (90% electricity, 10% gas).

I can't imagine what our summer energy bills would have looked like had we stayed in California. This is for an area with an average high temperature of 81-83 degrees during the summer. Contrast that to here in central Texas where the average high during the summer is in the 95-97 degree range.

This doesn't even consider the winter months, where gas pricing in California put our winter energy bills on par with our summer energy bills.

That explains all the still standing decommissioned wind mills across the Midwest.

An agenda like affordable energy?

Ignorance is pretty harsh. Have you looked at it really? Do you understand brown outs and the requirements to connect to the grid? The cost? To call someone ignorant while glossing over real inefficiencies, such significant cost increases and real reliability issues seems, well you should know.

Which is why we still need coal, gas, hydro, and nuclear.

If the market place can build a cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable mousetrap I'm in.

As I said, we're just not there yet and may never be.

Rick Perry has disappeared. Is he still in the Trump Administration?

In high demand you’re gonna need power on demand. Obviously you can’t demand the wind to blow or the sun to shine. Although tree huggers may think so. Also the areas with constant wind and solar are limited. The basic problem is storage. Until the scientists can figure that out you’ll never be able to completely decouple from something that burns.

Take away all the subsidies and see how much power is generated by wind, solar, unicorn farts, etc. It won’t be much!

Thanks cba123. What's the rest of the source of electricity -- methane?

Nah.
Wind energy is susbsidized at about 30%.

Plus the lines for it’s transfer to users is paid for by Texas tax payers instead of those users.

frankly, don’t know if this is a good deal for Texas. Probably is, but the rest of us are paying for it.

The only people that benefit from wind energy are the Chinese that make the equipment.

“If wind power is not subsidized, that’s fine. Somehow I doubt it tho.”

I absolutely love wind and solar power if it competes with other sources of power that are not subsidized by government.

I am also rather fond of raptor birds and bats. Those damm windmill turbines kill them with great efficiency.

Today in Texas most of electrical production is due to natural gas of which we have great abundance. Oddly, some liberal states have this same abundance but refuse to use it and in particular New York state.

Each state must live with the decisions wise or unwise of their leaders.
