Israeli Education Minister Rafi Peretz has said he believes so-called "gay conversion therapy" can work, triggering widespread condemnation.
"I think it's possible," Mr Peretz, an Orthodox rabbi, told Israel's Channel 12 TV channel. He added that he had "a very deep familiarity with the issue".
PM Benjamin Netanyahu said such remarks were "unacceptable". Other politicians and gay groups also voiced criticism.
"Gay conversion therapy" has been widely discredited around the world.
The practice attempts to change an individual's sexual orientation through psychological, spiritual and sometimes physical means.
What did Mr Peretz say?
"I think that it is possible to convert [someone's sexual orientation]," Mr Peretz said on Saturday.
"I can tell you that I have deep familiarity on the issue of education, and I have also done this."
Mr Netanyahu said: "The education minister's remarks regarding the pride community are unacceptable to me and do not reflect the position of the government that I head,"
The prime minister said he had personally spoken to Mr Peretz, a leading member of the ultranationalist United Right alliance, to express his criticism.
Nitzan Horowitz, who leads the left-wing Meretz party, said "gay conversion therapy" was a dangerous practice which causes extremely severe circumstances for youths, including suicide".
Israel's LGBT Task Force, the Aguda, called for the resignation of Mr Peretz.
He described how he had acted when a gay person told him about his sexual inclinations.
"First of all, I embraced him. I said very warm things to him. I told him, 'Let's think. Let's study. And let's contemplate.'
"The objective is first of all for him to know himself well... and then he will decide," Mr Peretz said.
He later attempted to clarify his comments, saying he did not intend that gay children must be sent to "conversion therapy", the Jerusalem Post reports.

Scientific studies have shown that significant percentage of gay people were molested growing up, far higher than their percentage of the population.
How many of them would have never been gay if not molested?
Et tu Netanyahu?
Yeah the conversion only goes one way... from normal to queer. /sarc
“Peace be upon Israel!”
So long as its voluntary I have no problem with it and laugh at the hypocrisy of these pro-science values these progressives claim to have.
Doesn’t he know? You can only convert normal kids to the opposite sex. That’s the only allowable conversion therapy. Good
I am of the mind that if gays don’t try to convert me or mine, I don’t try to convert them.

God also had some pretty harsh things to say about your ‘pride community’, Ben. Are his remarks unacceptable as well?
Agree
That is really, very, disappointing.
It is insane to believe—as all leftists these days do—that it is impossible for people to change sexual orientation even though their sex itself can be switched merely by saying a few magic words.
But liberals whole-heartedly support (taxpayer funded) therapy for drug and alcohol abuse which have dismal success rates.
And I think several states have actually made it illegal to treat homosexuals for their illness.
Wow, someone on Earth that makes use of Logic 101 and does Common Sense.... Why couldn’t we allow anyone who asked for and wanted therapy to get it. Maybe he wants to transition to a refrigerator, there should be no LAWS against people wanting to get therapy to help with their issues.
I just lost all respect for him. Hes taken the mark.
>>It is insane to believeas all leftists these days dothat it is impossible for people to change sexual orientation even though their sex itself can be switched merely by saying a few magic words.<<
The leftist view is incorrect because there is no such thing as a homosexual identity. There is only behavior. Every day we are rightly judged by other people for our behavior.
What people have a right to demand that others may only view their behavior using the criteria which they specify?
I don’t think conversion would be effective but it is better than doing nothing.
It is unscientific to say that the sexual orientation is genetic.
It is purely behavioral and learnt during puberty.
Until Mr Peretz is forced to resign, I won’t condemn Netanyahu. You never know if they’re playing the Gaystapo (Hmmm. Hope my meaning is clear).
So, a person wakes up and comes to the conclusion he is gay/bi whatever.
If he wants to be straight, he should have access to the whole spectrum of therapies to reach his desired outcome.
Who said the only permitted therapies and treatments are those that transform you from straight/natural/normal to something else???
But what a name to claim -— Pride!
