FULL TITLE: New legislation would allow victims of illegal immigrants' crimes to sue sanctuary cities for damages Senate Republicans announced new legislation Tuesday that would allow victims of illegal immigrant crimes to sue sanctuary cities for damages. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, would create a private right of action for the victims. And it would punish states or localities that try to hide behind sovereign immunity by withholding block grant money. Mr. Tillis said the bill is a direct response to moves by North Carolina authorities to refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. In one instance the Mecklenburg County Sheriffs Office released an illegal immigrant charged with trying to strangle a woman in a domestic violence incident. The bill would for the first time define in law what a sanctuary city is. As it stands, the bill would deem jurisdictions that refuse to notify ICE of the impending release of deportations target, or who refuse to detain targets for pickup, as sanctuaries. If politicians want to prioritize reckless sanctuary policies over public safety, they should also be willing to provide just compensation for the victims, Mr. Tillis said.

I am sure that is going to pass a Democrat controlled Housed.

I like it.
Long overdue. I hope some version of it survives and becomes law. You know there will be protests about it, highly emotional protests. Never mind all that. Just do it anyway.
Yep. Meaningless Virtue Signalling. Once the Pubs take back the house this sort of legislation will vanish like Obamacare rescinding legislation.
Sweet !!!
Liberalism needs to be attacked on every front.
Push Back !
They should also be able to sue the employers who knowingly hired illegal workers. They are responsible for bringing them here.
US Marshalls should be arresting city leaders and their police chiefs, and anyone else who wants to continue breaking US immigration law.
Thom Tillis of North Carolina? LOL
The individual politicians responsible for enacting the unlawful policy ought to be personally liable. If you want to put a stop to the nonsense, that’s the direct route.
More fiddling while Rome burns. GET TO WORK!
Crappy reportage, though. Neither the name of the bill or the bill number is in the article.
Why doesn’t the DOJ Enforce current immigration law. The laws that prove stick penalties for hiding, Harboring, or giving aid to an illegal alien. A clerk in NY is suing NY over the issuing of drivers licenses to illegals in NY. He probably has no chance because he is up against lawless judges. But the DOJ would have a much better chance.
Tillis is trying to appear to be on the side of the citizens for re-election.
This sanctuary city stuff should never have been allowed in the first place, but it’s been going on for decades. Even our current Tweeter-in-Chief won’t take action.
Since it does exist, I say victims should sue ‘em all. Sue the mayor, city council and police chief of a sanctuary city. Sue the employers and landlords of the illegal aliens who commit the crimes. Go for it. If nothing else it would help to educate the public.
why can’t this happen under current law?
It’s about time. I was calling for this type of legislation back when we controlled the house. Sure would have been nice to have that law on the books.
Victims should be able to sue the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT since they are responsible for allowing illegal aliens to reside in our country.
Tillis. You know he doesn’t mean it.
Clinton library huh, isn’t that the one in a seedy trailer park in rural Arkansas! No offense to the citizens of Arkansas!
when a city or county lets a prisoner out of jail who has an ICE warrant out for deportation and the sheriff doesn’t contact ICE to pick up, that’s hardly a federal created problem.
