Sunday talk shows falter in the ratings
The Washington Times ^ | July 4, 2019 | Jennifer Harper

Sunday morning political talk shows have some surprising heritage. It is interesting to note, for example, that NBC’s “Meet the Press” is the nation’s longest running television show, debuting as a half-hour program on Nov. 6, 1947, with serious topics and notable guests — back in the days when anchors spoke in the voice of doom, with an intense demeanor.

CBS’s “Face the Nation” went on the air seven years later in 1954, while ABC’s “This Week” debuted in 1981.

So between the three of them, the shows have been on the air for 175 years.

Sunday talk, however, appears to be losing its appeal. The Pew Research Center has tallied the public interest based on industry statistics.

“Average audience for the network TV Sunday morning political talk shows on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — ‘This Week,’ ‘Face the Nation,’ and ‘Meet the Press,’ respectively — declined 8% in 2018, to about 2.3 million average viewers,” the pollster said in a new report, which reviewed several years worth of complex Comscore audience data.

But wait, there’s more.

“The average audience for the four newsmagazine shows aired by the networks — ABC’s ‘20/20,’ CBS’s ‘60 Minutes’ and ‘48 Hours,’ and NBC’s ‘Dateline’ — declined in 2018, down 8% from 2017,” the report also noted.

Shocking. Consider these shows offer almost nothing but Dem talking points. And the hosts.... Chuck Todd, George Stephenapoulus.... Tim Russert and David Brinkley are long gone. Back in the day I would watch MTP. And The McLaughlin Group. But these shows? No way.

Viewers have to discern between Fake News and Real News. Many talk shows have been wrong for large percentages of the time.
It gets tiresome to try to figure out who is lying and who is hauling water for a party. It would be nice to hear someone who objective and fair.

Chris Wallace is such a tool; I just check to see if anyone is guesting for him, if so I’ll give it a chance.

Well they lost me so I know they are down by at least one viewer. I wouldn't listen to Lefty Chris Wallace, AKA Trump Hater if you paid me.

Do you have source for the historical viewership?

People are cutting the cord and watching on streaming site or you tube. Most don’t watch live anymore. That goes for all shows. The days when American idol can get 50 million for a finale are long gone.

I think we all have become "wiser" and "tired-er" ... The Fake News has really taught so many of us a lesson ... very little of what is on TV (and internet) is factual, almost everything is twisted. ... and we are growing TIRED of it.

Fox used to be (sort of) Fair and Balanced as they said, but not any more. This morning on Fox and Friends, it was literally a commercial for Joe Biden. The Democrats are getting far more air time on Fox than the Republicans. I simply switch it off .. and I think thousands of others are doing the same.

I do find that switching over to One America News can be refreshing for a news junkie ... they actually have news (there are OTHER things than politics going on in the world!).

Bottom line, how are candidates going to cope with a more intelligent electorate ... one that doesn't buy the BS at face value like before? (We've come a long way since Cronkite). I think the drop in ratings on Sunday Morning "news" programs is an indicator of a more intelligent (and more bored) audience.

Talk shows in general were weaponized by the left long ago.

Today the essence of the Sunday talk shows isn’t much different than the standard dribble spewed by late night talk shows.

It’s just packaged differently.

For eight long tedious years most were more like pep rallies for Barack Obama.

Now, for the most part, they have become nothing more than Infomercials for democrats and other Never Trumpers.

The market is saturated with 3 TV networks and 4 cable networks all vying for the same left half( or is it really a third) of the USA and saying the same thing in lock step.

These same type shows are broadcast 24/7 now on a variety of stations. People don’t have to wait for Sundays to get their political fix anymore.

Why waste your time watching BS pre-determined leftist narrative?

It would certainly be a novel idea to have a show that presented balanced, factual truth!!!! They ought to try it sometime!!!

TV sound: “And so those of us on this panel agree today that Trump is a multiple felon and he is about to be brought to justice by Congress....”

Viewer to wife: “Oh,no. They’re doing that rerun thing of the best of the past years’ shows again. How many times can they repeat those old shows? The same phrases again and again.”

Wife: “No, this is a brand new show because they just made a reference to last night’s AOC soundbite.”

(sound of remote click)

ABC had a Sunday show before 1981. Before they started “This Week With David Brinkley”, which then became “This Week” when Brinkley retired, they had a program called “Issues and Answers”. As I recall, some of their top newspeople such as Howard K. Smith were on “Issues and Answers”.
