What do the Ku Klux Klan, the labor movement, Students for a Democratic Society, the Weathermen, Occupy Wall Street, and congressional shooter James T. Hodgkinson have in common?

Answer: They all emerged from the murky depths of leftist politics. And all have a history of violence associated with their politics.

The Klan, which came to life after the Civil War, has been accurately described by Columbia University historian Eric Foner as “a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party.” University of North Carolina historian Allen Trelease has similarly described the Klan as the “terrorist arm of the Democratic Party.”

The KKK had no connection with leftism. The other groups did. And Eric Foner, who is cited as an authority by Jeffery Lord, is a Marxist:

Oh, but the KKK did indeed have a connection to the progressives. For one thing, there is Margaret Sanger, who spoke to their woman’s auxilliary.

Lord's citing of a Marxist Foner does not weaken, but strengthens his argument. It's a species of a declaration against interest. If even a fellow-traveler admits that the KKK was “a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party,” then probably the KKK was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party.

It's similar to his citing of the left-wing PBS for the proposition that "Klan evolved into a terrorist organization. It would be responsible for thousands of deaths, and would help to weaken the political power of Southern blacks and Republicans."

Oh sure, because Foner would naturally think that the historic Democratic party of Wilson, FDR, Truman, Kennedy and Johnson was chummy with Marxism and he would want to defend it.

It shouldn’t be hard for you to produce evidence of the Klan’s sympathies with Marxism since you must know of some.

Like maybe a fan letter that Karl Marx wrote to them, the same way that he actually sent one to Abe Lincoln. oops

Or maybe the second Klan denouncing Woodrow Wilson for jailing leftists during the Red Scare, and marching through the streets waving the hammer and sickle.

There are no histories of the Klan that link it with leftism. It’s a stupid unhistorical claim that the likes of D’Souza and Beck have popularized. It’s a discredit to Lord that he repeats it.
