Lord's citing of a Marxist Foner does not weaken, but strengthens his argument. It's a species of a declaration against interest. If even a fellow-traveler admits that the KKK was “a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party,” then probably the KKK was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party.

It's similar to his citing of the left-wing PBS for the proposition that "Klan evolved into a terrorist organization. It would be responsible for thousands of deaths, and would help to weaken the political power of Southern blacks and Republicans."
