Why Latinos back Donald Trump
The Hill ^ | 06/24/19 | Madison Gesiotto

Hispanic Americans are set to overtake African Americans as the second largest demographic group in the 2020 presidential election. That is bad news for Democrats, who are convinced they are entitled to these millions of voters. They cannot understand why so many Latinos, especially in important battleground states such as Florida, continue to line up firmly behind President Trump. The thought terrifies them.

Even more frightening for Democrats is the ineffectiveness of their main “outreach” strategy: extol the virtues of illegal immigration and speak in Spanish. As President Trump has pointed out, Hispanic Americans are no more enamored with a lawless border and millions of illegal aliens evading deportation orders than other Americans are.

That’s not, however, how Democratic “minority outreach” works. It’s all about constantly bringing up the identity group in question and harping on a few issues that focus group testing suggests are important. It’s an awkward fit for Latinos, who, contrary to the implications of Democratic messaging, are a highly diverse, mostly middle-income segment of the population — not just poor, Spanish-speaking immigrants.

The old-school strategy of race pandering is so toxic that even the Democrats’ own frontrunner is wary of being associated with it. Joe Biden, for instance, is running from “Hispanic outreach” in the Democrat mold as fast as he can. He chose to skip a major liberal Hispanic group’s conference that other Democratic candidates attended. Biden is trying desperately to present a “colorblind” campaign face, even going so far as to avoid using the words “Latino” and “Hispanic” in his speeches.

But the strategy is backfiring. The Democrat Party of 2019 is hopelessly wedded to identity politics, and Biden is getting nothing but grief from the liberal base for not playing along. The left’s race-obsessed fringe is already accusing Biden of engaging in "a denial of the unique experience of being Latino in this country.”

Biden’s predicament is a perfect illustration of the unwinnable corner Democrats have painted themselves into with their ethnic pandering. If Joe caves to his party’s identity activist corps, he risks alienating moderates. If he doesn’t, he risks alienating the radicals who will decide the Party’s presidential nomination. Given Joe’s penchant for putting his foot in his mouth, particularly on issues surrounding race, the situation will likely get much worse for him as the campaign goes on.

President Trump hasn’t forgotten the vital role that Florida’s Hispanic conservatives, and anti-socialists in particular, played in delivering his 2016 victory. That’s why Miami is the natural place to kick off the “Latinos for Trump” coalition. On Tuesday, the coalition will formally launch with an event featuring Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Núñez, who will host Vice President Mike Pence and other senior administration officials.

Unlike the Democrats, Republicans can offer Hispanic voters in Florida and around the country real value. President Trump has delivered on the issues that Latinos — like most Americans — actually care about: new jobs, better job choices, more money in their pockets, and confidence in America’s national strength both at home and abroad. Latinos don’t care whether the President has met with liberal activists who want affirmation of their “experience;” they care about what he has done to improve their lives.

Trump has been an ally of Hispanics beyond America’s borders, as well. Whereas President Obama was willing to reward and normalize the communist Castro regime in Cuba and turn a blind eye to Nicolas Maduro’s brutal pillaging of the Venezuelan people, Trump has taken a forceful stand against both of those repressive regimes, denying their illegitimate rulers access to world markets and pledging American support for the citizens who are bravely struggling to take back their own freedom.

Democrats, in short, are right to be afraid. Trump could not possibly have secured the Republican nomination and the White House without the support of millions of Hispanic Americans. In 2020, with Florida once again at the center of the Electoral College fight, their support will be an even greater factor. As Trump takes them seriously, Democrats will be shocked to discover just how receptive Hispanic Americans will be to the message of the return of American greatness, especially in contrast to the pandering of their own presidential candidates about the “Latino experience.”

And of course this was the GOPe idea too.

Pander, or attempt to pander with things they don’t actually want or care about that much.

RINOs chose Jeb in 2016 because they thought with his wife and ability to speak spanish combined with amnesty and open borders that Jeb would win.

It’s the same as the Dems plans, except the Dems throw in communist revolution rhetoric and allusion as well.

Some of the liberals are really lacking in understanding people.

These liberal activists, think that anyone of Hispanic background, is in favor of illegal aliens being in our country. It is so condescending of them to think so. This sort of thinking is a major weakness of the Democrats.

This is part of why I think Colorado and New Mexico are in play this time.

Hmmm, illegal aliens committing crimes in Latino communities, who could have seen Latin voters not favoring this sort of thing? /s

Who could have seen them not liking illegal aliens taking their jobs agreeing to salaries much less than established Latin folks?

Well, you reap what you sew democRats.

*Yawn*

Every Month an article will come out claiming “Hispainics back Trump”, “Blacks are leaving the Democrat party in Droves”, “Jew are trending Republican”

Then comes election time and they vote they same way they always do

But this time is different, I’m sure

Hillary got 66% of the Latino vote. She didn’t do quite as well as Obama did with the demo in 2012 (71%), but that’s still an overwhelming win. Trump got 28%. 66 to 28 is a blowout. The only thing interesting about it was that Trump didn’t do any worse than McCain and Romney with Latino voter, who pandered like crazy. I’ll believe this and Blexit and Jexodus when I see them.

Yes we will. It will be interesting to see if Trump has swayed some of the old steadfast voting blocks.

I sure hope so. If not, nobody ever will > IMO.

If Trump can win 20% of African-Americans and 30% of Latinos and Jews and hold the voters he already has, he wins the election.

Most of those groups will still be Democrat, but the result will certainly be significant

“extolling the virtures of illegal immigration”????
what virtues?

more to the political point, most Latino voters do NOT want more illegals!

which anyone at the DNC could ascertain by just deigning to speak with Latinos once in awhile

and as far as speaking in Spanish goes, it CAN be seen as a compliment but MOSTLY it is seen as just more false pandering .. .and most Latinos do NOT like it

Excellent post.

I got a kick out of watching George Will try to explain how Trump would alienate minority voters. He wanted JEB!

Will always bugged me because he was exactly the stereotype Republican that Democrats pretended all Republicans were. Ineffectual, pursed lips, posh party kind of guy that looked like he'd be terrified if he walked into a blue collar bar. Him and Bill Krystol were gonna tell us how to get the minority vote.

Liberals seem to lack the ability to comprehend that to those of us who are are ethnic Latinos whose ancestors have lived in the US for many generations are offended by their pandering politics-for us the experience of being Latino in America is no different from the experience any other American-of German, Irish, Italian, Congolese, Chinese, or any other ancestry has living in America...

It offends me-I have spoken Spanish as a 2nd language since childhood-like many people out here-it is good for business-this is an area very popular with tourists from Mexico-but I don’t know anyone here whose 1st language is Spanish or anything else but English-democrats must think they have gone back 150-200 years in time...

understood.
almost all the Latino.Mexican folks we know prefer to be spoken with in English

one prefers Spanish but he’s the only one and this is for real people.........when a politician speaks in Spanish he feels insulted, pandered

Spanish is a very nice language but most Latin folks in USA speak English and know when a politician is trying to con them

Sorry, but my wife has a friend who is fluent in several Spanish type languages. She can NOT understand the Mexicans.

She was from Columbia, came here with her husband who got her papers in the early 80s. She goes back once in a while.
