Pride week in Portland has always been an important holiday in Michelle Porter's family. With two of her five children identifying as queer, Porter says, the annual event—with its colorful parades and performances—has become a fun way to celebrate her kids and support the local LGBTQ+ community.
This year, however, Porter says she's afraid to bring her family to any Portland Pride events.
That's because a few alt-right bloggers have used photos and videos of her 10-year-old son dressed in drag to spread anti-LGBTQ+ messaging across the internet, exposing Porter and her family to death threats and violent hate speech.
"It's so damaging and so, so ugly," says Porter, who hasn't slept the past few nights out of fear and anxiety about her family's safety. "And for this to take place during Pride—a time when I should be celebrating my kid and letting him have fun—it couldn't be worse."
Porter's son has been targeted for putting on drag performances in Portland.
Porter says her son, a "self-confident, flamboyant kid" who has presented himself as gender non-conforming since birth, became interested in drag two years ago after watching RuPaul's Drag Race. After learning that Portland had a thriving drag scene of its own, he begged his mom to take him to a show—and she complied.
"As soon as Sparkle saw them perform, he wanted to be a part of it," Porter says. She asked the Mercury to only refer to her son by his drag name, Sparkle Lynn More, for privacy.
Not long after, Sparkle began participating in family-friendly drag shows with local drag queens. Porter says the local drag community's support of her son's work has been "life-giving."
On June 7, alt-right blog Gateway Pundit released a transphobic diatribe against a family-friendly Portland Pride event featuring Sparkle that took place later that day at Friendly House. The disturbing blog post sexualized children who dress in the opposite gender's clothes and scolded parents who let their kids do such a thing. It also shared photos from Sparkle's Instagram account, which is controlled by Porter.
In lieu of police protection, Porter has found security in another organization, one whose history is built on systematic indifference by law enforcement.
"The queer community has been amazing," Porter says. "They're used to the police not stepping up to protect their community. So they know how to take care of each other."
You have a point, but it only matters if we let it matter.
At some point we must stop letting the enemy set the terms of debate. And we must stop wearing the labels they give us.
I personally refuse to.

Look, the Left likes to compare us to Hitler. They use terms like White Nationalist. We know we’re not like Hitler and that Hitler was actually on the Left. We’ve been in this for a while. We know.
Others don’t know. They claim we’re like Hitler. People who haven’t heard this discussed, think Hitler was an extremist who existed at the right end of the spectrum.
Then we start calling ourselves “ultra Right”, and it just plays right into the hands of the Left. “Oh yeah, they do claim to be ultra right. I guess that guy was right.”
All I’m saying is we need to avoid making the Left’s case look stronger.
IMO < we’re on the Right in this nation, but that’s only because the enemy is so far to the Left of us.
We are actually Centrists. We agree with our Founders, Founding Documents, the U. S. Constitution and the Judaeo Christian ethics our laws are based on. We support Capitalism because it affords the most freedom for our people. We follow the law, and respect all men equally regardless of race.
The Left is the group that are way out there.
They are the ultra folks.
We are not ultra anything. We are solid Centrists.

If anyone ever had respect for Michael Strahan, I don’t know why. Especially after this.
They don't understand that the great majority of people in the country would be upset to see either behavior. Letting kids perform in ways reminiscent of sexualized adult performances is not a good idea, not good parenting, and one would think that even Portland liberals would realize that whatever one thinks of LGBTQ issues, it is best to keep children out of the mix.
What you say below is true, but that view is obsolete in liberal circles. Here on the leading edge of cultural liberalism, these events are considered family friendly. It is the new civic engagement venue. Parents take their kids to gay pride events.
They didn't "invent" the term "alt-right" (not "ultra right").
They merely redefined it to mean "Nazi", "white supremacist", and "racist".
They did the same thing with "white nationalist".
The more we buy into THEIR labels, the more we legitimize THEM and their "rebranding" of us.
Of course we aren't "ultra" or "far" anything. If anything, we are "normals".
Just plain old Americans.
In my way of thinking, the farther "left" of us normals people are, the less American they become.
These are not the people who we should let define us.
"Alt-right" started out as a way of separating ourselves from the "derp state" so-called "conservatives". Trumpian patriots, if you will, and it was a perfectly legitimate schism.
Then we allowed the enemy to cherry pick and define us by the worst of us.
It's what they do, and they do it well. And we let them.
I will not succumb to their propaganda. I'm done letting them define terms.
