WASHINGTON The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.
Fridays joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border. But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said.
The centerpiece of Mr. Trumps deal was an expansion of a program to allow asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their legal cases proceed. But that arrangement was reached in December in a pair of painstakingly negotiated diplomatic notes that the two countries exchanged. Ms. Nielsen announced the Migrant Protection Protocols during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee five days before Christmas.
And over the past week, negotiators failed to persuade Mexico to accept a safe third country treaty that would have given the United States the legal ability to reject asylum seekers if they had not sought refuge in Mexico first.
Mr. Trump hailed the agreement anyway on Saturday, writing on Twitter: Everyone very excited about the new deal with Mexico! He thanked the president of Mexico for working so long and hard on a plan to reduce the surge of migration into the United States.
It was unclear whether Mr. Trump believed that the agreement truly represented new and broader concessions, or whether the president understood the limits of the deal but accepted it as a face-saving way to escape from the political and economic consequences

To the dummies at the Slimes: Even Saddam promised to behave.
Odd that on the week of implementation of tariffs they got around to acting on their souther border, the FIU started shutting down organizer bank accounts, they began turing central Americans back or halting their progressions and started asylum in their country, etc etc etc...
Remember, they only toon action on the eve of our actions amd dreading the consequences acted on their promise....for a time...
We will be revisiting this soon...
If they promised months ago why wasnt it reported in the news? Looks like the suppression of good news about Trump may have backfired.
Another false report in the Failing @nytimes. We have been trying to get some of these Border Actions for a long time, as have other administrations, but were not able to get them, or get them in full, until our signed agreement with Mexico. Additionally, and for many years,....
.....Mexico was not being cooperative on the Border in things we had, or didnt have, and now I have full confidence, especially after speaking to their President yesterday, that they will be very cooperative and want to get the job properly done. Importantly, some things.....
....not mentioned in yesterday press release, one in particular, were agreed upon. That will be announced at the appropriate time. There is now going to be great cooperation between Mexico & the USA, something that didnt exist for decades. However, if for some unknown reason...
.....there is not, we can always go back to our previous, very profitable, position of Tariffs - But I dont believe that will be necessary. The Failing @nytimes, & ratings challenged @CNN, will do anything possible to see our Country fail! They are truly The Enemy of the People!

NYT and Haberman are prime fake news sources.
Promised, but didn’t do; and still won’t do unless Trump continues to hold the Tariff threat over their heads.
But they didn’t do it, did they?
Yeah ok they “promised” it several months ago which is why the illegals increased 7 fold from 20k to 140k this month. How stupid do they think we are?
Total damn BS.
But they didn’t do it til pressure applied!

This is why we voted for this man.... Straight shooter, unafraid of what the press or politicians say about him...
Total damn BS.
That is one of the silliest headlines ever.
And the story gets even sillier.
Arrrgh! Trump has succeeded! B-b-but that stuff was already being negotiated —by Trump appointees!— for months! Trump couldn’t possibly have had anything to do with it!!
Whether his administration has been working on this for months, it doesn't make any difference. The US negotiating these the deal didn't happen in a vacuum. Trump still gets the credit as the president because it's his administration.
I believe I read that Mexico had agreed to some actions but they were not following through with their promises.
The 6,000 troops on their southern border was one part of the agreement that they weren't doing.
Mexico freezing the caravans' organizers assets was not their idea. It was the Trump administration.
Trump's ultimatum of imposing the escalating tariffs, got them to straighten up and play ball the way the US wanted them to do. Putting just enough pressure on them to start doing something instead of just talking about it.
But the Left can't bear to give Trump any credit for was he's done. Including giving him credit for throwing the tariffs at Mexico to get them to perform.
I think it was a brilliant strategy. It worked and Trump wins again.
There’s a huge difference between Mexico agrees and Mexico does.
Real lies from a fake newspaper
“I dont care about Mexico’s southern border.”
Why not?
If illegals from all over the world were stopped at Mexico’s southern border, the caravans wouldn’t be crossing the Mexican desert to OUR southern border.
Although I’m not sure Trump’s piddly tariffs will accomplish any of this. Need to be much higher.
Wow and they just happened to finally act after Trump “co-insidentally” was ready to start laying tariffs against them. Same thing about Obamas great economy “co-insidenally” started taking off the day after Trump took office. Trump would be really dangerous if he actually implemented something on purpose.
