People not on SS really don’t appreciate the hardship. Fortunately I have a little other income. However, for 2 years in a row there was no change in SS. Then it was increased slightly, but so was Medicare, erasing the increase. Then the 4th year I had a small increase, but got a ticket because I failed to turn my lights on at dusk in a well light downtown area of a small community. I would have seen it as soon as I left that area and turned my lights on. That ticket ate my entire increase. This year I got a $36 increase, but if I had a 6% increase in my $300 a month food bill, I would only have $20 dollars to put towards the increases in property taxes of 5% and fire insurance. Thank heavens I am only on one cheap medication.

In addition if one has some supplemental income then you may have to pay taxes on your SS. The calculator for determining if you owe this taxes allows a $25,000 deduction for singles, and $32,000 for a couple. As a widow, if I have a new man in my life, we would be unlikely to be able to marry and give up the $50,000 we can deduct separately, rather than $32,000. Guess when that deduction was decided—1983. Guess how much it has been increased since 1983—ZERO, NEVER. Guess how many people realize that they or their parents or grandparents are being scxxxed by this—Very Few.

Are you saying that spending $10 a day in food is eating like a queen? I am also fixing a number of meals for my sweetheart who is helping me do repairs and drives me around to take care of business. So it is less than that for me alone.

Yes, and many, many Americans are malnourished from eating too many cheap carbohydrates and insufficient vegetables, fruit and quality protein. I don’t intend to be one of them. It is no wonder we spend so much money on health (sickness) care which we taxpayers are all supporting financially. When I was in school in Mexico in 1957, one of my mother’s monthly $70 checks did not come. I had also loaned a friend $20 which they did not repay. I lived on $5 for 3 weeks, buying kilos of tortillas, white wheat rolls and getting guys to treat me to a meal or a beer. I gained 10 pounds which I lost after 4 months back in the USA eating better food.

There is a big, big difference between spending $300 a month on groceries for one and living on $5 of tortillas for three weeks.

It does not take nearly $300/month to prepare and eat a healthy diet anywhere in the US in 2019.

Let’s see if the voters of South Carolina finally catch on to Graham’s “get conservative the year before the election and then get back to liberal for the other five years of his term” act.
