NYT ^ | 6/4/2019 | Catie Edmondson and Maggie Haberman

Republican senators sent the White House a sharp message on Tuesday, warning that they were opposed to President Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on Mexican imports, just hours after the president said lawmakers would be “foolish” to try to stop him.

...

“I want you to take a message back” to the White House, Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, told the attorneys, according to people familiar with the meeting. “You didn’t hear a single yes” from the Republican conference. He called the proposed tariffs a $30 billion tax hike on Texans.

He called the proposed tariffs a $30 billion tax hike on Texans.

Who better to pay taxes then those buying foreign made products and shipping wealth out of the USA? Consumption taxes like tariffs are WAY better than income taxes.

If you want to be a hypocrite complain about the budget deficit at the same time oppose the import tariff.

"To think I preferred Cruz over Trump.”

You're not alone. I did, too. It isn't hard to think Cruz had a hard time putting away a neophyte congressman Beto who literally had no legislative success other than voting "Yea' or "Ney"

Texas needs a better choice.

Republicans, except for President Trump, are all in the pocket of big business. I sound so cliche but it’s true.

The drug cartels and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the DNC all called, they said to thank you guys for your support.

Cruz, born in Canada to a Cuban and an American, sides with Mexico over America.

He is a very confused and marginally loyal citizen.

Trump should ignore the Senatorial traitors and proceed with the plan.

Make them join the Democrats in legislation. Let’s see if they are “foolish” enough to expose themselves to their constituents.

I have theory that wages of Americans can never be driven low enough to please the GOP and their handlers. There is no floor.

Yes, in the normal course of things, tariffs are bad things because they are taxes and interfere with commerce.

Our founders would call you a tory and tar and feather you for saying that. Tariffs are great. Better than the income tax, raise revenue and most importantly protect US industry. WIN WIN WIN WIN

Seems like it doesn’t it. At least enough Republicans in the Senate do that can affect votes.
