The Last Longest Day
PJ Media ^ | 31 May 2019 | Richard Fernandez

Emmanuel Macron will not attend the 75th anniversary of D-Day, "saying that French presidents only lead international D-Day ceremonies on round-number anniversaries such as the 60th or 70th. ... critics argue that he should make an exception this year as it is likely to be the last major D-Day anniversary while veterans are still alive."

To Macron, who was born in 1977, D-Day must seem like ancient history. The French president is currently more interested in preserving his alliance with Berlin than in commemorating the reopening of the Second Front against Hitler a full three generations ago.

It is probably hard for a man of Macron's age to feel the emotional urgency of those distant days. Seventy-five years ago, the human impact of the invasion could scarcely be understated. Over 4,400 soldiers died in a single day, the Longest Day, so named in popular culture after Erwin Rommel's prescient observation: "The first twenty-four hours of the invasion will be decisive. . . . For the Allies as well as Germany, it will be the longest day."

Also, friend of obama.

Obama probably would not have gone either.

Macron will regret this little show of arrogance when Election Season begins. Is he really doing this just because Trump will be there? Petty and churlish.

Emmanuel Macron will not attend the 75th anniversary of D-Day . . .

I forget--has he, you know, come out yet?

Ah, see, it’s the French-devised metric system again!

Just because he isn’t in the lead role — just because he isn’t the star of the party — he just refuses to attend? What a small man.

There was news within the last couple of weeks about declining numbers of visitors to Civil War sites in the US; as the European populations fall (in both Europe and the US), I expect that disinterest will very quickly work its way up through WWII.

Many among the imported replacement populations either have no interest in these things or were on the opposing side; they certainly couldn’t care less about Western Civilization or our history.

Like most punks, history for Macron started the day he was born. We unfortunately have a large percentage out of recent generations with no sense of history.

Marcon is probably saving his efforts for an 80th anniversary of the successful Fall Gelb, to be celebrated with EU ally Germany.

Maybe Francois Hollande or Nickolas Sarkozy would like to try winning one more time. More likely, it is time for Mademoiselle Marine Le Pen to set sail and break a glass ceiling or two.

John Keegan, the noted British military historian, spent some time in Normandy a few years after the war when he was a student. He remembered the French housewives complaining about how the American troops had damaged their gardens.

C-SPAN today reran a program from May 7th featuring the historian Nigel Hamilton, who has written a book about FDR and the last part of WWII (1943-1945--from the planning for D-Day until FDR's death). He said Churchill was very much opposed to the idea of invading Normandy and gave FDR credit for insisting on the plan. He praised FDR for his decision to pick Eisenhower for the supreme command in Europe (not the obvious pick).

Macron should ask his mommywife what she remembers from when the Allies stormed ashore in Normandy.
