Just another "sign of the times". . . America is losing its sovereignty acre by acre.

Sure, why not, foreigners have Trillions of dollars due to trade deficits. Selling of America to foreign landlords will continue so long as trade deficits continue.

Good time to cut agricultural subsidies.

The way I see this is that while they may have title to the land it is still located within the USA, so it is still American land. So there!

the truth is that vast stretches of that "heartland" is now owned by foreigners, About 3%.
To: Maudeen
For perspective, the US controls 2.35 billion acres of land. Not 1% of the country’s land is foreign-owned.

I’d like to see a graph of foreign ownership over time.
I remember reading alarming reports ~25 years ago that Russia was buying up a lot of American farmland.
To: Tomato lover
I keep telling people this but some do not get the idea. Just because they have a title does not mean they can cut it out of the ground and head back home with it.

I remember when Sony was buying up American real estate. Amidst all the Sturm und Drang, someone asked, "Can they take it back to Japan?"

According to the Mexican constitution Americans legally in Mexico get a 2nd class treatment. Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote, and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. Its time the US should consider making that reciprocal.
Prohibit and fully legally enforce punishment to violators offering any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges .In other words the incentives to those thinking of sneakimg into this country are removed and those that do better expect expulsion no job no voting no landowning ..

I pay rent(property tax) to the government every year on the land I’m suppose to own.

Would $5000/acre be an average price? Around $150 billion worth?
To: Maudeen
The way to fix this is to correct the trade inbalances, which is what Trump is doing with Tariffs.
When other countries are buying as much trade goods from us as we are buying from there, there is no excess funds to buy our land, equities or debt.
We need more tariffs and they need to be permanent.

a square of land is 640 acres. 30M acres is 46,000 sq miles or roughly the same as Pennsylvania.

Meh...
Only about 20% is foreign-owned farmland, and most of that is by Canadians.

Where they own it may be the problem. Some of the latter generation farm families just aren’t into agriculture.

Sure, they can't take it with them but they can poison it or the crops if they wanted. If we kicked them out, that'd be WWIII and there wouldn't be many US citizens knowledgeable in taking up the operation to get food to the table.
the Chinese purchased Smithfield Foods in 2013
Smithfield (as in Smithfield Hams with spokesperson Paula Deen) is big on hiring illegals. They've strategically bought up Hawaii despite Hawaii's laws. Mostly the Japanese but China high on the list.
