New Trump tariffs would affect nearly 70% of consumer goods: Citi
Yahoo News ^ | May 30th, 2019 | Sibile Marcellus

The next time President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet will likely be at the G-20 summit in Japan next month. The leaders of the world’s two largest economies will no doubt aim to resolve their long-simmering trade dispute that has the U.S. and China going tit-for-tat on tariffs. If they fail to reach an agreement, there’s a good chance Trump will follow through on his threat to place additional 25% tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese goods.

A new report by Citi estimates the impact of additional tariffs on virtually all Chinese imports would be far worse than what consumers have seen so far, because the first round of tariffs focused mainly on capital goods, not goods consumers purchase directly. (On May 10, Trump announced a hike in tariffs to 25% from 10%, on $200 billion of Chinese imports, with China hitting back shortly after.)

According to Citi, the prices of goods impacted by tariffs have stabilized over the past couple of months. But the U.S. Trade Representative office’s list of $300 billion worth of Chinese goods that will be included in the next round of tariffs will represent 67% of total imports of consumer goods from China, 66% of automotive vehicles, 19% of industrial supplies, and 38% of capital goods.

As the above data show, we're in deep folks.

We have to support POTUS and break the will of the Chinese. And we have to end this imbalance once and for all.

But, one big flaw in all these analyses is the assumption Americans will keep buying tariffed Chinese goods as the prices climb.

We won't.

We'll find new sources and/or postpone our purchases.

We are the largest consumer market in the world, by far. There will be suppliers lining up to hawk their goods.

Count on it.

The second round of tariffs hasn’t even started yet. They hit on Saturday. 25% on $200 bn in imports.

Financial markets are under some strain. Bonds are pricing recession. It’s a bold move, let’s hope it works out for him.

LOL

Yeah by pennies. So according to the article we should give up and out source all major means of production to China and continue to allow them to ignore patents, copyrights and intellectual property.

Walmart is already lining up alternatives from India, Vietnam, etc. Business does not survive by relying on democrat, stooge media and Chicom scare tactics for their business planning. We might not be buying Walmart junk made in America yet but at this rate it won’t come from China.

It’s about time we weened our-self off China. Interestingly, as more and more manufacturing is automated, it could mean more manufacturing in the US. We’d save money on shipping...

China is reducing their Yuan. So 25% does not seem as much. So if you reduce the price of Yuan as you add tariffs its no longer more expensive.

And by the way there should be a cost to our companies who do business. If they have to eat some of the cost, thats ok too. If our people are paying higher prices for Chinese goods over goods from our country or other countries that is also a good thing.

70% ?!! Insanity.

It’s worse than we thought. Wait till the food is imported. Remember Chinese dog food was killing thousands of pets? Melamine was used as an adulterant to wheat flour or whatever. It registers as a higher protein content when tested, so they got a better price at the grain elevator. Kidney failure. I think they tested baby food too, and it was in that too.

If China were the only source of cheap garbage I'd be really worried.

On the other hand, if I made heaps and heaps of cheap garbage and based my economy on selling it to one country that was talking about sweeping tariffs on cheap garbage, I'd be even more worried about this.

Walmart places merchandise orders 18 to 24 months in advance of shipment on MANY goods, including holiday items, so even if they are developing alternate sources it will be well into next year before they are receiving them.
Walmart has already warned prices will be going up:
“”We’re going to continue to do everything we can to keep prices low. It’s who we are,” Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs said on a conference call with reporters.

“However increased tariffs will lead to increased prices for our customers.”

China is like the one legged man with only a wooden leg. He just discovered that termites that love the wood in his one wooden leg.

Those termites are making sawdust out of his leg 24/7.

Soon, he will not have a leg to stand on.
