Will nationalism eclipse Europe in next week?

A week from today, Europeans may be able to gauge how high the tide of populism and nationalism has risen within their countries and on their continent.

For all the returns will be in from three days of elections in the 28 nations represented in the European Parliament.

Expectation: Nationalists and populists will turn in their strongest performance since the EU was established, and their parliamentary group – Europe of Nations and Freedom – could sweep a fourth of the seats in Strasbourg.

Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party is predicted to run first in the British elections, winning two to three times the votes of the ruling Tory Party of Prime Minister Theresa May.

In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally is running even with the party of President Emmanuel Macron, who pleads for “more Europe.”

Matteo Salvini, interior minister and leader of the League, predicts his party will finish first in Italy and first in Europe.

At Salvini’s invitation, a dozen nationalist parties gathered in Milan this weekend. A week from now, they could be the third-largest bloc in the European Parliament. If so, their gains will come at the expense of the center-left and center-right parties that have dominated European politics since World War II.

The populist-nationalist parties are energized and united by both what they detest and what the EU has produced.

Whatever may be said of populists and nationalists, they are people of the heart. They love their countries. They cherish the cultures in which they grew up. They want to retain their own unique national identities.

What is wrong with that?

Hmmmm. The 'eu'. Who would have thought that would turn out badly? Guess someone thought the u.n. wasn't getting the "one world" deal moving fast enough so they tried to jump start using europe. Pretty sad to see 62+% of the Swiss offer up their gun 'rights'(?) and ideas to Brussels last Sunday. So, nationalism or the "yewwwwwww".

The EU would have been dissolved decades ago if opposition to it weren't divided between Left and Right.

Some of the Leftwing Euroskeptics can be won over to the nationalist side in upcoming elections, in the same way that Trump was able to win over a fair number of blue collar former Democrats, but the overwhelming majority of the anti-EU leftists will not support nationalist parties. Leftist Euroskpetics are just as committed to internationalism as the Eurocrats, their only reason for opposing the EU is that it's not socialist enough for them.

GO, Tommy Robinson, GO!

Hopefully, he'll get elected as a MEP. The British presstitutes, particularly the Beeb, spin the 'nūze' so much that CNN ALMOST looks respectful. Hopefully, enough Brits are aware enough of the bias in the press, to vote for an honest man, rather than the 'squishy socialist islamophiles' that traditionally run for the European Parliament. Being a Canadian citizen, I am quite familiar with 'squishy socialist islamophiles'. The 47 year old teenage girly-man who thinks he 'reigns' over Kanaduh, comes to mind.

My prayers are with Tommy and British Patriots. GO, Brexit and GO, Tommy Robinson, GO!

Europe has a long history of oscillating on this issue. It either wants to be one big place -- under the Hapsburgs, under Napoleon, under Hitler, under the EU ...

Or else it wants to be a number of sovereign nations.

The modern concept of Nation State largely grew out of the Peace of Westphalia that ended the Thirty Years War in 1648 (and essentially broke the Hapsburgs).

I think the EU has run it's course, and I hope national sovereignty makes a comeback in Europe.

The Austrians took a hit, though, via corruption.

I hope the EU is dissolved, but I doubt it will happen. France and Germany want it real bad, as a way of erasing the memories of the bitter wars between the two.

There's a difference. Nations other than France that were ruled by Napoleon or nations other than Germany ruled by Hitler did not become so voluntarily. Nor did the smaller polities conquered by the Hohenzollerns or Hapsburgs.

In contrast, today's Europeans subjugated themselves to EU bureaucrats completely voluntarily - without a shot being fired or a sword being drawn.

The desire for European Unity was a result of envying the US.

But you simply cannot create a US-like country out of Europe.

Not only was the project driven by past trauma and envy of the US, there has always been an undercurrent among the Yurp elites (they’re not French or German or Dutch or Italians........they’re Yurps) to set up this new European empire AGAINST America.......to use anti-Americanism as a tool to unite Europe essentially under Franco-German hegemony.

This has been their attitude despite America being Europe’s greatest benefactor in history and despite America still providing for their defense.

The only difference they had with Hitler, is that they somewhat tolerate Jews.
