I’m thinking of printing up some bumper stickers that read, “Honk if you’re a Democrat who is not running for president!” Mayor de Blasio is now in, no doubt with memories of how well both John Lindsay and Rudy Giuliani fared with their base in Gracie Mansion. Don’t they know you need to live midtown on 5th Avenue to win the White House? Is there a switchyard big enough to handle this many presidential candidates, or is 2020 fated to be the Great Train Wreck Election for Democrats? Meanwhile, groundhogs everywhere have a new reason to dread February 2.

The former New York City mayors mentioned in the article — Rudy Guiliani and John Lindsay — who failed to win the presidency were Republicans. Of course, New York liberal Republican mayors can’t win Republican presidential nominations, let alone the presidency. And as Republicans, they did not have access to the hundreds of millions of campaign dollars flooding from the Democratic billionaires of Wall Street into Democratic coffers.
But Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio is a completely different story. Not only does he have access to Democratic campaign dollars, as the Mayor of New York City he has the power to punish wealthy New York businessmen, developers, etc., who do not contribute to his campaign by refusing to allow their projects to go forward. He can especially punish those who donate campaign dollars to other candidates like Joe Biden.
He also has other important assets, principally his wife who is not only Black but actually looks Black like the vast majority of America’s Black voters, who will therefore be more likely to identify with her than with the Democrats’ current leading Black presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, who, with her white skin and flowing hair looks more like an Irish lass who just got off the boat from County Cork than an African-American.
Then there’s the lesbian vote. Bill de Blasio’s wife is not only Black, she’s also a self-declared lesbian, having written an essay entitled “I am a Lesbian.” The Democratic daughters of Sappho will have a champion in the 2020 election.
Then there’s the all-important New York primary, which Bill de Blasio with all his billions of campaign dollars and multi-identity-group wife will have the best chance of winning.
Maybe we should stop anticipating that Joe Biden with his ever-more apparent senile dementia will become the Democrats’ candidate next year and instead start worrying about the de Blasios taking over the White House.
