This month marks the centenary of Pete Seeger. Singer and "activist", he kept going almost to the end, wafted down by delirious admirers to Manhattan's financial district a decade back to serenade the Occupy Wall Street protestors. I believe he sang them "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?", although "Where Have All The Showers Gone?" might have been more appropriate with that crowd. We shall explore the history of "his" most successful song a little later today. But here's what I wrote about him upon the occasion of his 90th birthday:
This week marks not only the first hundred days of King Barack's reign and the 30th anniversary of Mrs Thatcher's arrival in Downing Street, but also the 90th birthday of Pete Seeger. The celebrations of Mr Seeger's tenth decade are extensive. If he seems a remote figure from the pop culture back catalogue, not so fast: He played at the Obama inauguration. Which, when you think about it, is quite something.
One must congratulate the old banjo-picker on making it to four score and ten, which is a lot older than many "dissenting artists" made it to under the regimes he's admired over the years. Two years ago in The New York Sun, you'll recall, Ron Radosh had a notable scoop: Hold the front page! Stop the presses! Grizzled Leftie Icon Repudiates...
Who? Castro? Chávez? Al-Qaeda?
Whoa, let's not rush to judgment. No, the big story was: Grizzled Leftie Icon Repudiates . . . Stalin.

Pete Seeger leads the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York
Seeger was an unrepentant communist whp practiced personal capitalism. Like all lefties, a total hypocrite.
Nothing worse than a rich, smug communist. Bernie Sanders fits that model too.
"'If I Had A Hammer'? Well, what's stopping you? Go to the hardware store; they're about a buck-ninety, tops."
One could substitute “Woody Guthrie” and maybe not be exactly right with some details, but then again wouldn’t be far from right, not far at all.
People like Pete Seeger make me want to spit on the ground.
socialism is not for the socialist leading the charge

I kind of liked Night Moves. One of my favorites, in fact.
Heh, I think you are thinking of good old Bob Seger, who I like as well.
That mistake is easy, at one point when I first became aware of that old damned communist, I thought it was Bob Seger too!
My husband once saw him come into the Dick Cavett Show wearing a tux. He went into the men’s room and changed into his overalls and emerged all-faux Everyman.
I would add to that “...thanks to capitalism.”
Well, you could substitute your screen name for “Wimoweh” in the song.

Whooosh!
Right over my head...:)
Had a friend in NY City working as a waiter who was allowed to wait Seeger’s large dinner party. He found out later why no one else wanted to handle that table. Seeger, being a communist, didn’t tip! Marx wrote extensively about tipping being a decadent habit of capitalism.

Your Russian buddy has it figured out. :)
Force fed to me by Sesame Street as a young lad.
“Banjo Bolsheviks” That was my favorite description of all those commie creeps.
I have to admit I was hot for Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary though.
