Gov. Kay Ivey signs bill to ban abortion in Alabama

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has signed the bill to make abortion a felony in Alabama, the governor’s office announced.

“To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God,” Ivey said in a press release.

The Senate gave final passage to the bill on Tuesday night, sending it to Ivey’s desk.

The bill says it will take effect in six months. But the sponsors said their intent was to trigger litigation that could lead to a challenge of Roe v. Wade at the U.S. Supreme Court.

ACLU of Alabama and Planned Parenthood have said they would sue to block the law.

“My viewpoint is different from yours. A foetus is not even viable until several weeks along in pregnancy. The mother is a live human being. Jewish law and common sense indicate the the mother’s life and wellbeing come first.”

Bearing a child that’s the result of rape or incest is not going to risk the mother’s life.

“A woman is not simply a vessel for carrying babies, no matter how innocent the babies are. In cases of rape and forced incest, the mother should be able to abort the baby rather than being compelled to carry it to term.”

Your first sentence means nothing, since no one’s arguing that women ARE “simply a vessel for carrying babies,” and the second sentence merely makes a proclamation of your opinion, and does not offer any argument for it at all.

“I understand that terrible things have been done by liberalizers of abortion. However, that is not an excuse for going totally in the opposite direction. But that’s people.”

I don’t need an excuse for not wanting to see unborn babies murdered. Life begins at conception. Destroying that life is murder. I don’t care about the circumstances that brought about that life - it’s STILL murder.

The fetus is human life. No one has the right to take an innocent human life.

What is the philosophical or legal basis for doing so for the convenience of another person.

The mother has the option to adopt and not take the innocent life.

The babies aborted are victims too, though. Abortion is a brutal procedure, and I understand why people support the rape/incest exception, but I also know the baby will die a terrible death (ripped apart and sucked through a tube or dismembered limb from limb) - one that not a single born person would ever wish to endure.

I do understand, though, that the majority of public supports abortion in that instance, and there is a possibility being seen as too extreme may push people away from the pro-life movement and towards electing Democrats. That really is their main talking point that they are using against this bill even though rape/incest account for 1% of total abortions. If the Dems get in, they will legalize it through 9 months.

Im afraid they should have waited til Ginsberg was replaced. I have no confidence in Roberts or kavanaugh to do the right thing. I don’t know why we fought so hard for the latter

Because a baby should get the death penalty and an already traumatized woman should have to live with the knowledge she took an innocent life just to make the rest of us feel better about rape or incest??

‘Life begins at conception.’

your post makes excellent points, my compliments...if pressed, I would say that abortion for any purposes other than saving the life of a compromised mother be illegal after medically affirmed detection of embryonic development, either a fetal pole or a heartbeat...

These ARE unfortunate cases. But they do NOT make up anywhere near the majority of why women seek abortion.

I don’t think that this is a well-crafted bill. It will put all Republicans on defense. They have made the quest for perfection become the enemy of the good, IMO.

Beautiful post!!

Not everyone has to be a perpetual “victim” in life. Many of us take unfortunate circumstances and use them for God’s glory.

I was pregnant before I married my husband. And I wasn’t a teenager. I was a young working woman with a promising career ahead of me. All the wisdom and advice of that time said abort — your career was too important! But I didn’t and was blessed with my wonderful husband a best friend at the time who were both Catholic and were not going to let me go down that road.

And I, like you, now sit back and look over a wonderful 32 year marriage, three beautiful children, one now married and us expecting our second beautiful grandchild.

To think that I could have given it all up in one afternoon at an abortion clinic makes me almost nauseous to think about. I pray constantly for the women who find themselves in these situations and that they too would have great people in their lives to guide them, love them, and enable them to make that choice.

We women always have the choice, but it doesn’t have to be the choice to abort.

WE need to find out who these ‘Aunt Linney’s’ are....who is funding them?

They sound very prolific.

Exactly. Under this law, grown women can cross state lines or find a doctor to certify that their health is in danger.

Only the young victims of rape or incest will be forced to carry to term from the point of conception.

This law should have included rape and incest.

Because some babies are subhuman ... it's OK to rip them apart with a dull knife.
