11-year-old sent to principal’s office for protesting Nazi sign

An 11-year-old Tennessee girl who told her classmates to stop making the Nazi salute was sent to the principal’s office, her father said in a tweet in which he asked the public to send her messages of support.

Keith Jacks Gamble, chair of the Department of Economics and Finance at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreeboro, Tennessee, posted his request on Tuesday.

Gamble said that a student at his daughter’s McFadden School of Excellence in Murfreesboro was assigned to play Hitler for the school’s Living History project and to make the Sieg Heil salute. After students started to make the salute all over school, his daughter told them privately that she thought it was wrong.

At the final rehearsal for project, students returned “Hitler’s” salute, leading Gamble’s daughter to shout “Stop it, put your hands down!” His daughter was removed from the room for being “disrespectful,” according to a timeline Gamble posted in a screenshot on Twitter. She was then sent to the principal’s office.

“Each time, my daughter spoke out even though she was told by a teacher ‘not to address it.’ She has been bullied by classmates and targeted personally with Nazi salutes, so school feels lonely sometimes,” Gamble tweeted.

The screenshots show that a teacher told Gamble’s wife that their daughter was given “an open platform at that time to appropriately voice her concerns and share with her peers her feelings, then she was asked to not address it again.”

I do not trust the story, especially with an academic for a father.

Rather than "playing" Nazis perhaps the teachers can just show them "Der Untergang".

That gives one a pretty clear and uncomplicated view of "Der Furher" and his gang.

You’d think the parents of the kid assigned to play Hitler would have something to say about it also.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

it is protected by that pesky 1st amendment. Can’t have it both ways.

“Stop it,” is also protected by the 1st.

His daughter was the only one removed for being “disrespectful.”

The Nazi salute is protected in this classroom, but saying stop it isn’t?

Can’t have it both ways.

Wow. The girl and parents just struck gold. Talk about violation of your freedom of speech!

I take it it was not a rendition of “Springtime for Hitler”.

Then she also had a 1st Amendment right to tell them to stop it. Actually, teachers and administrators are in charge of the forum of school assemblies and hallways, and of course classes. Juveniles exercise their rights to free speech subject to the sufferance of the adults, and it seems awfully cock-eyed that students have a constitutional right to deliberately torment this girl with Nazi salutes, but she doesn’t have a constitutional right to shout ‘STOP IT!’ if it bothers her. Is there a constitutional right to give out wedgies, too? I admire this girl’s courage. It’s in short supply these days.

Yes she did, but apparently she was being disruptive when she tried, and that is why she was sent to the office, not because she disagreed with the people saluting.

I always remember the story a Freeper told some years back of a kid in (IIRC) the Dallas Fort Worth area who presented the above book to his junior high school class as his book report assignment. The teacher was not amused and this kid was summoned to the principal's office for such a discussion and his parents were notified about this as well.

James Evans, a spokesman for Rutherford County Schools, said in a statement to BuzzFeed News on Tuesday: “The student was not disciplined or punished in any way for her concerns or actions. In fact, the school agrees the actions of the students were completely inappropriate.”

Agree. Every slight becomes a topic for the media or social networking because ‘victims’ publicize their personal business for attention. Being a victim is the new black.

The people saluting were also being disruptive.

In fact, I’d say that the act of repeatedly giving the siegfried salute to a student whom they know it upsets is ipso facto disruptive. They should all have been sent to the principle’s office.

I’m not saying I like this being thrust in the media glare, but here we are. It’s in front of the court of public opinion for better or worse, and imho, you can’t order someone to just “don’t address it” if obnoxious kids are siegfrieding you for the purpose of getting a rise.

She couldn’t just stand there and take it. She’s 11 years old, and as I said, I admire her courage, because she’s been targeted by multiple kids but didn’t back down. But the forbearance necessary to “just don’t address it” was too much to expect in the face of such outrageous behavior from her peers. 11-year-olds are new to the moral dimension of the universe, and some of them fancy themselves like Moses, breaking the tablets in front of the golden calf worshipers. At least that’s how I felt back then.
