California jury links RoundUp to cancer, awards couple $2 billion

jury ruled against chemical giant Monsanto on Monday, awarding a California couple $2 billion in damages after determining their cancer was caused by the weedkiller RoundUp.

The decision in Alameda County Superior Court comes on the heels of a recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) statement that said there were no serious public health risks associated with glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp.

But a growing number of juries disagree with the EPA's position. Monday's ruling marks the third case since August in which a jury found that glyphosate caused cancer. More than 13,000 similar lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto or its parent company Bayer.

Many of those suits were spurred by a 2015 World Health Organization analysis that said glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic in humans.”

Alva and Alberta Pilliod, the plaintiffs in the California case, argued they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma following decades of using the weedkiller.

Bayer relied heavily on EPA's assessment o

Not enough money in it.

Not just cancer.

My dad would walk around the yard with the roundup spray in his hand, then come in and make himself a sandwich. He died of Alzheimer’s. You wonder.

“What 14 year old would know to use protective gear?”

No adult supervision?

The adult was my drunken uncle whom had me balancing his checkbook at 14. I was the adult.

Roundup isn’t used on crops or produce.
Its a general defoliant used to control weeds in areas where you don’t want growth.
I used to use it in green houses to keep weeds from growing into green house floor.

This is insane. It’s one of the safest herbicides ever created.

I beg to differ. Ever heard of Roundup Ready corn, soybeans, alfalfa, sorghum, etc?

Looks like everyone is already expressing my thoughts so I thought I would add this tidbit.

For anyone at home trying to save da erf or their bank account, a solution of vinegar, salt, and dish soap kills most weeds just as well and works even better against things like green willow at a fraction of the cost.

And people wonder why prescription drugs or (insert your favorite product) cost so much.

Product liability juries have no scientific expertise, only emotional responses.

I’ll, of course, now stock up on Roundup. Sad that this country now has to become a food importer, due to one hateful jury.

Those old farmers were using nastier stuff than Roundup to kill weeds in the old days

I tried Roundup decades ago on weeds growing through my driveway, and the weeds loved it... they grew twice as big and fast when I fed them that stuff.

People who oppose GMOs in the food chain were unable to get governments to ban them. So this is their next line of attack IMHO. If there is no Roundup then the rationale for planting GMO crops disappears.

A couple of years ago the UN’s World Health Organization decided that Roundup was a “possible” carcinogen, which has spurred the latest flurry of jury awards.

I think the most honest thing we can say about human health effects from Roundup is that we just don’t know. We particularly don’t know the long-term effects of eating crops that were grown in the stuff.

Roundup isn’t used on crops or produce.

Wrong.

The whole reason GMO crops were created was so that farmers could do "no till farming". The seeds are modified to be able to withstand Roundup. Then the fields are treated with it, killing all of the weeds. The GMO crops then can grow undisturbed.

Correct, hence the name “Roundup Ready” crops. My brother-in-law is a seed salesman for Pioneer. It is big business for them.

Hope your tests find no lymphoma/cancer! Friend used Roundup on her lawn and her 1 y/o dog has lymphoma. Will keep you in prayers for good results.
