Denver could make history with vote on 'magic mushrooms'

Voters on Tuesday were deciding whether to make Denver the first U.S. city to decriminalize psilocybin — the psychoactive substance in "magic mushrooms" — and add a new chapter to the city's role in shaping wider drug policy.

A citizen initiative on the ballot followed the same tack taken by marijuana activists to decriminalize pot possession in 2005 in the city. That move was followed by statewide legalization in 2012. A number of other states then broadly allowed marijuana use and sales by adults.

Psilocybin decriminalization campaign organizers have said their only goal is to keep people out of jail in Denver for using or possessing the drug to cope with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and other conditions.

Also in the article: "....some researchers warn that it should only be used under medical supervision and can prompt paranoia and anxiety....."

Noooo!! A psychedelic drug causing paranoia and anxiety?!

Libertarians and their ilk have no idea what they are going to accomplish if they have their way, viz. a culture of vending machine narcotics. All drugs, according to those boobs, should be legal.

As if the thousands of tents in Portland, Seattle, LA, San Fran, aren't evidence enough that drugs are bad?

Farewell America. We hardly knew you.

If the libertarians had their way, opiods would be sold at Walmart.

I live outside Denver so I cannot vote no. But, I will be exposed to psychedelic drivers. I hope the politicians pushing this get sued for the deaths it causes. If suits are thrown out, well, the surviving family members will know what to do.

In the mid-70’s I tried mushrooms twice. Not a great experience but not as bad as LSD which I also tried twice.

They shouldn’t be legal. I can see how cannabis can be beneficial, but mushrooms not at all. They just make you stupid and are a waste your time.

Totally violates Federal law and this need to be stopped. Federal law totally supersedes this madness. I hope Barr will crack down.

Is Denver actively trying to attract most of the stoners in the western hemisphere?

Opiods aren’t as bad as psychedelics and pot in making people think like liberals and leftists.

...and went to the movies to see "Alice in Wonderland"...
...the Cheshire Cat was cool...

The ballot measure would not have made them legal, just not a priority for law enforcement. These mushrooms are beneficial for people with PTSD, drug and treatment resistant depression (very common these days unfortunately) and other disorders. You wouldn’t be able to walk into a dispensary and buy them, but if you were caught in possession of some, you wouldn’t get locked up for life. It is failing right now but was actually pretty close: 54.41% against, 45.59% in favor.

We went to see “Magical Mystery Tour.” It sucked, and I was a big Beatles fan.

When 2001: A Space Odyssey first came
out I went with some friends to see it at
an indoor theater. We got baked before
the movie.  During the stargate scene one
of the girls turned around in her seat and
said to the person behind her, "I love you."

Goose Lake rock fest 1970, some zonked out guy just below stage left hawking, “Psilocybin. Psilocybin...” for three days.

At least he, and however many of his customers, thought it was good enough so as not to have had his gluteus maximus kicked.

I believe that would be a grave mistake. To legalize for regular public use.
I’ve heard of some quite bizarre and violent crimes that took place while the user was high on mushrooms. Lives ruined or taken in one night.

Just as with LSD, there may be some positive benefits discovered for certain patients when prescribed in a clinical setting. Jury is still out, but, yes, it is possible. But leave the experimentation to professionals in a controlled environment, not some 11 year old alone in his bedroom. The brain is still forming for young people.

Yep, but that is only the “half” of it. But the “half” is more than 100 percent of what you need to know—what no one will listen to.

Legal or not, learn to identify mushrooms and you’ll start seeing psilocybin everywhere. The most amusing place I ever spotted some was growing in some camel crap with the reach of toddlers at a petting zoo.
