For decades the Chinese have been led to expect that if they approached some agreement and then backed off at the last minute, the Americans would go ahead and accept it because the Americans are so eager to reach an agreement, any agreement, that they will back down and suck it up.

Trump doesn’t roll that way and the Chinese will come back to the table more honest after having learned that lesson.

That’s right. Trump is doing the right thing and the dire predictions are not going to happen. China just needs a face-saving way of giving up.
