As Avengers: Endgame continues its world-conquering run at the box office, one particular scene is attracting some attention for introducing the franchises first openly gay character. And while some fans are pleased to see the MCU finally take this first step in LGBTQ representation, others were left feeling pretty underwhelmed.
The character in question features in a scene where Steve Rogers leads a post-snap support group. One of the attendees, played by Endgame co-director Joe Russo, mentions that he went on his first date since the events of Avengers: Infinity War, using the he pronoun to refer to his partner. In that moment, Endgame becomes the first Marvel movie to acknowledge that gay people exist in the cinematic universe. The problem is that this first example of an LGBTQ character is almost completely inconsequential, getting only one scene, a few lines and no name.
Though some will argue that this one minor character is better than nothing, his inclusion also feels like too small of a baby step to seem especially brave or groundbreaking in 2019. And the fact that Joe Russo emphasized this moment by playing the character himself has struck some fans as unduly self-congratulatory, not least when Marvel TV shows like Jessica Jones, Runaways and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have already introduced multiple queer characters with far more prominent roles.
In any case, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has repeatedly hinted that a greater level of LGBTQ representation is coming to the MCU, and just last month, executive vice president of production Victoria Alonso claimed that the world is ready for the franchises first gay superhero. Clearly, Avengers: Endgame wasnt considered the right film to follow through on this tease, though if recent reports are anything to go by, then perhaps Russos unnamed character could be considered a stepping stone for whats to come in The Eternals.
Time for Ace and Gary to make their appearance!
I saw the movie 5 days ago and I only found out about the gay character just now.
I don't think superhero movies will be big in the 2020s.
The just need more Homo sex scenes!
Why do these companies and movies make such a hard effort to appeal and appease less than 5% of the population????
I’ll say this, I told myself going in that last will be the last Marvel movie for me especially considering the direction that franchise will be heading very soon.
Social engineering and conditioning.
Because the entertainment industry has made homosexuality its own form of celebrity super-heroism. It is extraordinarily rare to see such portrayed as self-defeating train-wrecks they much more typically are.
A $1.2 billion world wide opening weekend box office? Couldn’t have been that upset.
Everything you see on a big or small screen is there for a real reason. Its not just a coincidence. Nothing is incidental or accidental unless its on a blooper reel.
Future meek and mild mannered Bruce Bannon will now turn into a 400 pound flaming Drag Queen when he gets mad
They can add any perverted character they want to - I'll spend my money elsewhere.
Groot splices himself with a shrubbery?
Misspelled: Should be LBGTQFUBAR
Gay director placed himself in the first 15 minutes of the movie playing a gay character. I was disappointed in the film and what was done to the characters. Thor especially. They will make a fortune but the movie was depressing and predictable. Every baton was passed to a woman or minority. We all knew Thanos killed one half the population. Didn’t need half the movie devoted to everyone’s sadness.
