New York Archdiocese names 120 priests accused of sex abuse

NEW YORK (AP) -- At least 120 priests accused of sexually abusing a child or having child pornography have worked in the Archdiocese of New York, the archdiocese said Friday in releasing a list of names that includes bishops, high school teachers, a scouting chaplain and a notorious cardinal.

The release, from the nation's second-largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, follows more than 120 such disclosures from other dioceses around the country as the church reckons with demands for transparency about sex abuse by clergy.

In a letter to church members, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said he realizes "the shame that has come upon our church due to the sexual abuse of minors." He asked forgiveness "for the failings of those clergy" who betrayed the trust invested in them to protect young people.

"It is my heartfelt prayer that together we as a family of faith may be healed," Dolan added.

Church abuse watchdogs and lawyers for abuse accusers said the release of the list was a positive step, but some of them saw it as incomplete.

It doesn't include accused members of religious orders who worked in the archdiocese's churches and schools, though some orders have released their own lists. Nor does it list priests who were ordained elsewhere and later served in New York.

And there are no details on accused priests' past assignments or the allegations against them, although some have emerged in news accounts, lawsuits and criminal cases.

"It's certainly a good thing that they've come out with the list," said Terry McKiernan of Bishop Accountability, a watchdog group. But "do they still not see that this very, very reluctant way of offering information about the crisis is the wrong way for them?"

Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling said that "the important thing is that we have released

When a predatory homosexual priest molests an underage boy, there is only one solution. He should be arrested, tried and imprisoned. What the Church does with him is immaterial.

It brings up an interesting subject.

The conviction of Cardinal Pell in Australia bestirred the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to begin a Vatican investigation. This, disturbingly, prompted Dave Weigel to pontificate ...

https://www.firstthings.com/web-exclusives/2019/03/the-holy-see-and-cardinal-pell

“...the CDF investigation can be helpful: properly conducted, it will exonerate Cardinal Pell of the preposterous charges on which he was convicted.”

Australia does not look kindly on their sovereign authority being usurped by foreign powers. This could highlight Vatican influence in national policy that could make Aussies go all stabby.

I know few go past the headlines and this is Yahoo news, lol!

Here’s the real story which isn’t nearly as sensational, nor as much fun for those to say “why doesn’t the Church do something!”

quote from story:The list includes priests ordained between 1908 and 1988. Many have died, and the archdiocese said none is currently working in the ministry.

Most of the alleged abuse happened in the 1970s, ‘80s and early ‘90s, but there have been two credible allegations of sex abuse by active clergy since 2002, according to the archdiocese. It said authorities were alerted about both those cases.

Priests ordained in 1908? 2 allegations since 2002, there are 932 Archdiocese priests and 913 priests of religious orders, not counting 400 deacons, 1500 religious brothers and 3000 nuns.

One of the priests on that list was from a parish church on Staten Island. He struck terror in the hearts of adults whenever he stood in back of the church or walked up to the altar before Mass. I find it hard to believe that he was able to pretend that he was sweet and kind enough to molest an altar boy. The priest is dead now so we well never really know the truth.

Knew one of these priests in HS. A real piece of work. Enjoyed being the dean of discipline and liked to roam the halls wearing a black cape.

120 priests in one Archdiocese (that they admit to) - The RCC is corrupt to the core.

The RCC is corrupt to the core.

That is true, but they're not the only ones. Predators are naturally drawn to professions which offer them access to their prey.

That no one ordained after 1988 shows up says a tremendous amount about formation in the 1960’s through early 80’s in contrast to what went on after.

I just grabbed my 1981 Catholic Almanac— in 1980, the NY Archdiocese had 2700 priests resident (which includes a fair chunk of religious).

It would be interesting to know the date of the earliest reported offense and figure out how many priests went through the diocese over that time. I suspect that those that offend tended to show up in multiple dioceses so with some models of statistical analysis will have an exaggerated presence.

They protect those with current legal liability and release names of those it is too late for.

The Church is admitting to the ancient sins of the long dead leaders.

The current pedophiles in place go unidentified.

This is policy, it is happening across the country.
